RE: Pinus contorta 'Chief Joseph' fall color

Thanks Ken,

I was taking photos of my Chief just a few minutes ago !

Color is pretty much the same as yours....

I wonder though -- when does it shine most ? ....in sunlight or under cloudy skies ?

Need to experiment some more with the camera....

PS. Where does yours come from ?
...I need to check, but I think mine is from either Harold Greer or Coenosium.

gee tree... 2005.. after one from ss died in 2003 ...

that is a redbud trunk in first pic.... with the declination of the sun.. it gets full winter sun from about noon on .... a candicans probably shades it earlier in the winter day ....

i suspect.. winter burn is more of a wind issue... and i HOPE that when it gets bigger.. it can withstand winter a bit better

Should I be protecting mine then for the first couple of years???From Wind???From Sun???I just planted it in Sept.

It's an expensive tree to jeopardize even though I am a firm believer in the Free Range theory...

RE: Pinus contorta 'Chief Joseph' fall color

free range after GETTING ESTABLISHED, eliot ....

i might throw a rose cone on it in late dec ...

if you are sure it will be snow covered.. that ought to be good enough ....

any little help.. since its only been there since sept ....

but you are a zone warmer than me,... so it all might be moot

"Should I be protecting mine then for the first couple of years???From Wind???From Sun"???

In my opinion ideally, choose a location for full sun in summer and where the winter sun angle will provide winter shade ...

If grafted to the right under stock new plants will be burn free after a period of time.

Those grafted to Pinus sylvestris will have needle tip burn issues throughout their lifetime...so Bob Fincham at Coenosium Gardens says. I had one grafted to sylvestris...never did do well...needle tip burn caused a slow decline over a period of 5 years. It finally made it to the dumpster.

I bought my next one from Bob because of his experience in perfecting this conifer through trial and error. Going on its 3rd year now with no issues.

The story I heard about this conifer is that apparently, a fellow named Doug Willis was hunting elk in the Wallowa Mountains of Oregon (summer home of the legendary Nez Perce chief and his people) when he stumbled upon a tree which he realized was an incredibly rare genetic mutant of the lodge pole pine (pinus contorta). He dug it up, brought it home, and asked a plant-savvy friend to propagate and sell the grafts. Its uniqueness stems not so much from its winter gold color, as there are other conifers which display this, but from the fact that the very needles that turn yellow revert to green in the spring and summer.

Just a story...don't know if it's fact or fiction.

Nice plant you have there, Ken. I tried growing one once and one day it basically told me, "I will grow no more forever." I think it's time I tried again.

Ken,
Your's is really yellow.

Mine is not as yellow yet.

For the time being, the temperature is not cold enough. During the day the temperature is abour 8-12°C, 46-54°F
Normally, in France in this period, we shoud have 4-5°C.

I heard the tree was found in all it's glory, scions were obtained but.... some prick took heard of where it was growing and chainsawed this enormous, tribal-religious-specimen, right to the ground.

Any info would be appreciated... Thanks, Dax

Dax,
I think you are thinking of the golden form of Sitka spruce.
I am attaching a couple of links regarding this cv. One is a book that covers the subject in detail. I thought a pretty decent story, and the other from B.Fincham's website. The cv used to be called both 'Aurea' & 'Bentham's Sunlight' and is now known as 'Haida'.

More yellow and you're dead !!! Must be that sand (yellow?) you're growing your plants in. Wonderful!.
Hi ykli ! It's not every day we get someone from France posting nice pics. Could you tell me where I could find one of those "Chiefs",please ? Thanks in advance! T.
BTW :I think I heard somewhere that we're 'enjoying' the mildest autumn since 1900. A little bit too wet to my liking, though!

RE: Pinus contorta 'Chief Joseph' fall color

Dax, Doug Wills found Chief Joseph growing in the woods when he was out hunting elk one fall. Can you imagine stumbling onto that right as the color was starting to get it's winter glow?

I'd feel like I had walked into a holy of holy places. Brings the hairs on my neck to a raise, and the rush of adrenaline streams from the mere thought.

@Tunilla
I bought mine at Vallonchene.
They have quite a few rare conifers. You will be able to buy small ones, up to 4 liter container by Internet. The one I have bought at the nursery was in a 10 liter container, and is about 60 cms (24 inches) high.
