moles and conifers

just curious- I planted a bunch of norway spruce and green giants in September- and lately I noticed tons of mole-dirt mounds all around and some piratically right over the root-ball of the trees. When I walk in some areas -of course your foot sinks right in from the tunnels. I was thinking that this can't be good for the trees. I know they don't eat the roots but they seem to definitely mess with the integrity of the surrounding soil. anyone ever have this problem?

i planted some lilac twigs in spring.. and every other week or so.. i had to go out there.. and re-compact them into the soil ... but i had to do that anyway .. to water them ...

they didnt seem to mind .. who knows where the water went.. lol ...

how big are we talking..

does your ground freeze??? .. if so.. they ought to be slowing down soon ...

The trees are 3ft-6ft in height. pretty good size footballs. the moles seem to move in different spots-or there are more than a few ( probably the case in my yard). yes the ground should freeze up soon- pretty cold today with some light snow. I was just concerned that they would undermine around the tree ball and have them shift or cause some other damage. they sure make huge dirt mounds for such little critters.

I'd not worry. Their tunnels are narrow but long, so most of the molehill soil will be from a long way away from the tree rootballs. Actually, it'll likely be beneficial, by improving drainage.
