Need Suggestions

| Looking to utilize several 8-10' x 4-5' evergreens to used as a screening (more casual look). About 6-7 hours sun, well drained, but is a heavier soil. Only protected from direct south and north winds.
I thought go with an upright Juniper but it seems that as they mature they look ratty on the lower quarter of the plant.
Then I thought go with an Arb, but those things seem to suffer in our dry winds in the winter.
Any suggestions? Maybe there are superior cultivars of unright junipers and arbs that I missing.

| Thuja occ. 'Nigra' is a good screening specimen for what you're trying to do. Tolerant of clay, wind, all that stuff. It is a rich-green cultivar. Dax |

| I am surprised you might have problems with arbs in your zone. For junipers, I would avoid any of the J. scopulorum cultivars. The other species of uprights around here look much better. |

Typically Juniperus chinensis is the main offering. I was looking at the Ames, Iowa and Hooks #6 cultivars. Any thoughts on those varieties? I feel like the Thuja occ. Nigra cultivar is still suseptible to winter burn. Would anyone agree that Technito (sport of Techny) has better wind burn resistance? |

| There's a huge distance of Nigra planted 35 miles south of me on the grounds of where I graduated college. They are on a steep hillside where the hillside faces south and where the hillside is probably 10 feet in length... giving them some protection. I can't imagine Arbs at all, even in general, not looking excellent anywhere zone 5. Even up on mountainous terrain where temperatures can fluctuate week to week for months on end, Arbs do great. It just seems odd to me, too. Dax |

| My neighbor has a grouping of Emerald Green Arbs exposed to north and west winds and they get winter burn every year. He also has one that is in front of a shed so its protected from west and northwest winds. No winter burn and its pretty vigorous. I think I'd prefer an Arb...with that said any other cultivars you suggest? Nigra is a good one, but it gets 15-20'. Not sure if I want to top it off every year to maintain that 8-10' height. |
