 o
shorter blue spruce?

Hi everyone,

I'm not a regular to this forum but I thought this was the place to go for an answer.

I live in the southern tier of New York State along the PA border and want to plant a blue spruce tree that won't get extremely tall, staying perhaps around 10 or 12 feet max.

I don't want the short, squat ones, but would like one that retains the conical shape without having the soaring height.

Thanks so much.
I'll await your replies.

For the best discussion I've seen...

Here is a link that might be useful: DWARF COLORADO SPRUCES

By far the best I was able to find (though it is not in the link above) when I was looking for the exact same thing is Sesters Dwarf. Naturally conical and I think it will cap out at 10 feet or so (though most sources even say 6 to 8 feet full-grown), and take a good while getting there.

RE: shorter blue spruce?

i wish i had a buck for every time i have typed this...

NOTHING EVER STOPS GROWING .... especially conifers ...

MOST height and width estimates are at ten years.... and every year thereafter.. they will continue to grow at the annual growth rate ...

so if something grows 2 feet per year... it will outgrow your spot in about 5 years ...

if it grows 3 inches per year... it will take about 20 years ...

at the link.. is a great tutorial about conifers.. describing mini/dwarf/large size categories for conifers...

there you will also find a database.. where you can plug in the names of suggested picea pungens ...

you should look up donna's rainbow ... grows about 3 inches per year in my garden ....

there are also some blue firs that grow pretty slow, such as Abies lasiocarpa [var. arizonica] 'Compacta' about 4 inches annual for me ... there are also some blue concolors with slow growth ...

dont know where you are [zone].. so no comment about whether either are appropriate for your garden ...

why pungens???? or are you looking for blue???

good luck

Yes: A spruce that caps out at any height is dying or dying back.

You can slow the upward growth of any conifer by trimming the leader at the appropriate level - typically there are several branch growth points on a leader so you can trim the top two thirds of a leader and slow the trees growth by 66%......trim many of the side candles on the tree and it will also get more bushy I have found.

Not getting into any of the growth discussions above....I agree with above, the best dwarf version of the traditional blue spruce I've seen is Sester's Dwarf
