Abies buds

Sluice's pic of Abies concolor shows a beautiful set of buds at the end of a shoot. I am currently examining specimens of Abies magnifica, California red fir, and it is very different.
Red fir buds are practically completely hidden by a great many very short needles that wrap around the buds.
After the bud flushes, the needles remain for years, just below the bud scale scars, marking each year's growth along the shoot.
Do any of your firs do this too? |

| That tight cluster of needles around the terminal buds is something I've only seen on A. magnifica and (even more obviously) on A. procera. Other firs, the needles around the terminal bud aren't markedly denser or smaller than on the rest of the shoot. Resin |
