Short, fat and dense but excellent fall color. No other BCs in my town matches that red color... |

| My goodness. That is a neat one. Is it close enough to your home to keep an eye on it next year? Any chance of "stealing" some cuttings in the event it does. |

| If I know Lou, and I have for many years on GW, he's already getting it grafted... any new grafts yet? What happened with that other BC that wasn't chopped that you liked that was also a yard tree? Dax |

| It happens to be in the parking lot where I do grocery shopping! I collected some seeds off it. We'll see if I can produce seedlings with red fall color. I can always send cuttings to anyone who wants them! Dax, You must be talking about 'Midlothian' cypress? It's in somebody's yard so I'd have to ask for permission to bring 15 feet ladder to get cuttings! They pruned it way up high so they could play basketball in the driveway... I did end up with 5 seedlings from that tree and all produced deep green color. The form seem to vary a bit. I have this seedling that is narrow and weepy. Another one which looks like it would eventually be a monster.
I never get tired of looking at this gorgeous tree! A director of Stephen F Austin State University apparently likes it a lot so he used that picture for his presentation over taxodium species. He's the one who is responsible for bringing taxodium hybrids from China that we all may eventually end up having in our yard. He said that he's already rooting some cuttings from Midlothian cypress seedlings. He must have liked them! Time to get ready to drive 3 hours to SFA arboretum to do hunting for seeds! Have a nice day! Lou |

Beautiful Bald Cypress. Is the Midlothian pure Bald Cypress? What kind of color does it have? |

| That's the photo. I'd be interested in some wood for grafting Feb. 2011, Lou, of the smaller tree. Good luck today... Dax |

That's what Montezuma cypress looks like at SFASU. That area doesn't get much water because the area slopes away from it so it doesn't grow as fast. Still looks good. Still completely green while rest of BCs turning color or full of colors or almost bare... The one at Dallas Arboretum is huge. They told me 11 years and it looks like 50ish feet. Just huge. The ground is flattish with a pond near by. Scotjute- The expert from SFASU said "it looks like Montezuma-y" or something like that when I emailed him the pictures. I haven't really seen any BCs like that at SFASU or anywhere so I don't know but it did act like BC dropping leaves early compared to MC and start growing at the same time as BCs. No fall color at all unfortunately. Just went from very nice green color to brown right away. He said that the seeds are more like Central Texas BCs. I got your seeds. They seems to be in line with Midlothian cypress for seed size compared to what I've looked at at most BCs around here. Lou |

The Medina River seeds were similar. However some of the seeds from Colorado River trees(Town Lake in Austin) were noticeably bigger than the others. I picked the Colorado seeds in the rain and stored them in an open coffee can. Surprisinglly the bottom stayed moist and several of those seeds have already germinated. Have seen the same deep green color as the Midlothian tree on some of the trees south west of Waco area into north and west of San Antonio. Never been back to check on fall color of the trees. Will have to schedule a trip some year for that. |
