On online Japanese/English translator says gin = silver. Combined with a couple appropriate-appearing choices from list of multiple meanings given for setsu it seems cultivar name might mean something like Silver Temple, or indicate the reverse of the needle was more silver than usual - or at least noticeably silver.

That sounds about right from what I saw - "more silver than usual"

Dennis says that Pinus parviflora cultivars can put out a lot of growth (even the slow ones) when a lot of rain & good summer - other than that he says he can't tell me anymore than that it is upright.

Thanks Dax - I think I need to find a place to plant one of those.

If it turned out that setsu in such a context did mean Temple then it might be in reference to an upright habit. Wouldn't surprise me, but I don't know. A silverleaf Pinus parviflora, with its whorls of short branches (at least when young) could certainly fit the bill - if a temple was thought to look like a pagoda.

Iam going back to Japan. when I go back, I am going to meet many Japan nuseryman Assoiation members in Saitam.
Since no one posting after yours,I will find out more for you. Temple in Japanese is "Ji" or "tera" setsu is more likely node, ring(s) around leaf ? Iam not forgetting but will take some time to settle. Gone for almost for 35 years from Japan.

Basically means silver node or strip. I'm more interested in its habit and growth rate.

Finally found more info on this one.

Its a fast growing upright at about 6-12" annually.

Truck is irregular as it grows in a sweeping upright possition.

Its conider to look like a large bonsai.
