Hey Random, count me in. Even though I'm not particulary fond of yellow needles, a bit of brightness would do well in my shady green new yard. I'll give it a try.

Western yew would not be my first guess for the species of the sample shown - which does look quite like yellow forms of English yew prevalent in older plantings and still found in commerce. The latter species comes up on its own from seed in parks and other available land near local plantings; it is also one of those shrubs (or trees) that persists long after other signs of habitation (or other land use associated with planting decorative trees and shrubs) may have mostly disappeared from a site.

This is a sport from a Taxus brevifolia tree in the mountains, far from any human habitation. I've seen the fruit and the general form of the plant. It is also surrounded by acres and acres of T. brevifolia thickets. I am aware of the yellow forms of both T. baccata and T. cuspidata, and the needle color does look very similar. This is not one of those species.

Western yew foliage usually not as glossy, tidy, robust and handsome - but there is some variation, of course, and the yews of the world are all enough similar that some have wanted to boil them down to a few species.
