This is a recent photo of the graft I made of Araucaria muelleri on A. columnaris rootstock. A. muelleri is my favorite (well maybe tied with A. humboldtensis) of the genus and has very coarse shoots and foliage, even more coarse than A. araucana, but with rubbery, almost succulent foliage, not at all prickly. It grows on a few mountain tops in New Caledonia and is extremely rare in cultivation, maybe only in 5 or so collections outside of NC. This plant has endured temps around -5 C, but probably can't take a whole lot colder than that. However, I plan to take the leader out (all Araucariaceae are highly orthotropic) and graft it this winter. Once this plant is backed up, I will plant the original in a highly protected microclimate and may also cover it during particularly cold spells.
