Reversion?

My friend sent me a photo of an abnormality he discovered on his Chamaecyparis lawsoniana 'Treasure Island' . He was inquiring as to whether it was a sport or simply a reversion. I do not have much knowledge when it comes to genetic mutations, so I offered to post his query here to get a much more informed response. I asked if there where any color variations or anything else distinguishing besides the size difference, and he said there was not. My immediate thought was that this is just a reversion and should be cut out, but I did not want to speak to something I was unsure of. Additionally I wondered if one does find a mutation that does not have any significant color or textural differences from the host plant does it have any redeeming value?
