Dax is your man for this, he has some doozy mugos.

My vote would be Pinus mugo 'Jakobsen' which I believe is a nigra cross, hence some green tampering.

^Yep. Just what I was thinking. Some Heldriechii can be dark. Variable.

Pinus mugo 'Humpy' can be quite dark under the right conditions. Not so sure about it's brooms.

Come to think about it yes after reviewing your link..

I have two of them each carrying two different cultivar names. Neither one correct. Next spring if it holds I will change them to Pinus heldreichii 'Smidtii'.

I see Bob Fincham still refers to it as 'Smidt'. I would like his input.

alley cat; Yes i currently grow Pinus heldreichii Smidtii. Awesome plant, though i am beginning like Banderica a bit more.

Another cool little mugo is Varella, it has a perfect symmetrical shape and nice texture with both long and short needles. I don't think it is in the US yet.

Pinus nigra 'Nana' is a nice dark green...

i dont expect him to go take and post more pix.. observation would be good enough for me ...

has anyone admitted.. there is color differentiation in mugo??? ... i started by suggesting something other than.. and it seems like most answers are anything but mugo ... lloking out my back door .... the only color variation i see on the few mugo i can see from said door .. is based on density of needles.. rather than an actual color change

Sorry Ken not true.

Both taken on 12-4-13 about 5 minutes apart. Cloudy day...but...each one with a different camera.

Same type of day today. I will go back to the 'Smidtii' with the same camera I used on the 'Jakobsen'. If I remember right I took multiple photos of each with both cameras all the same either way.
