Developing cultivars of any Araucaria is effectively impossible, as you can only propagate them from lead shoots. Side shoots will never develop a new lead shoot with tree form.

Although a stock plant will replace a leader removed for grafting, it still means you can only expect one scion per stock plant every two years, or at best one per year. So it's just not economical.

Also, you can never really know what the tree will look like until it is mature, so you have to leave your potential stock tree to reach maturity before you can harvest your first scion. Not easy, and not desirable if the exceptional specimen is wanted to be admired in its original state.

Maybe one day someone will discover a hormone that can revert branch scions to upright growth, but it hasn't been done yet.

Resin

Resin's points are valid. However, a cultivar of NIP was grown in CA somehow for a while (Majestic Beauty) and 'Glauca' grows at Huntington (but I only have horizontal grafts of it, for the reason Resin suggests).

'Majestic Beauty' was grown by Monrovia for a while. There are quite a few cultivars of Araucaria (araucana, heterphylla and even rulei!) in Krussman, yet they are never seen. Here is a photo of 'Glauca' at Huntington.
