Future Transplants

If you are growing seedling trees in a location where you plan on transplanting them from in a few years, is it better to keep them in pots or in the ground? Either will be kept outdoors. My first instinct is growing them in pots is better because it gives you a predictable root mass to deal with, but then I think plants in the ground will grow at a faster rate, I'd love some other opinions.
