trees ... of which conifers are... LOVE sand ... its all about proper drainage ... and sand has it ....

but its all about.. watering them properly.. for a year or two ... third year in drought ... to get them established ... and then they should be pretty much free range ...

i am thinking.. picea pungens will not be friendly to most of GA ... but that is a guess... use the latin name along with state name to search info ....

if for cutting... there is annual pruning ... to force the shape you are thinking about ...if outdoors.. i wouldnt bother.. as too soon ... you wont be able to get high enough to keep at it.. and it will revert to its natural shape.. and a tree half trained down low.. and natural above.. is going to look pretty weird ...

your county Ag or extension office.. ought to be able to guide you on good trees for your GA ... should no one here... be able to offer options [which i doubt.. lol]

In the wild Colorado spruce grows beside streams in the Rocky Mountains - sand in Georgia not likely to be suitable. Even here the winter climate is too soft, with aphids and mites being problematic. There you probably have to use some kind of pine.

It would stay outside. We don't use cut trees anymore. I guess I could call the Ag. Center. This is alot more fun. We will look at Ace hardware to see if they have anything on sale.
