Breeder's Hall - 31 - Sidney Waxman, Storr CT USA
The Sidney Waxman Life Monument Gallery
Sidney Waxman (1923-2005) has built up with his likely conifer selections a soft world of fairy tales with love to plants, family and people. Without his heritage we all had been a little empty. Thanks to Heaven for his life.
Larix decidua Varied Directions 1985 Sidney Waxman USA
Dr. Sidney Waxman - Originator, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT in 1985. First described in the Int. Plant Prop. Bulletin. This cultivar has been listed under names as Larix x eurolepis and Larix kaempferi and is currently listed in some references under these incorrect names. Large growing in a very irregular and erratic manner. No two plants are alike in form. Adds a real focal point in the landscape where the space is available. Robust twigs propel the branches up and out from this vigorous, spreading, deciduous plant. Branches eventually arch down and cover the ground. Fresh green in spring, golden in autumn. ACS text by Chub Harper.

Larix laricina Blue Sparkler 1985 Sidney Waxman USA
Upright growth. Needles are bright light blue that turn to gray blue, shoots radiate at a 45 degree angle. As with other larches when droplets of water are held in the leaf axils they sparkle in the sunlight. Hence the name 'Blue Sparkler'. ACS text.

Low mounding globe with short bluish green needles. Has a problem in the ACS Central Region of SLDS (Sudden Larch Death Syndrome) Has a tendency to die back suddenly without reason during hot summer weather. The older the plant the more prone it is to this problem. Unusual, soft blue-green needles on a dwarf, congested, globe-form plant. A deciduous conifer, the exposed twigs add a structural element to the winter garden. A seedling from an American larch, "Witch's Broom." ACS text.

Outstanding blue green color and fine lacey foliage characterize this dwarf shrub like conifer. This plant often steals the show when Im showing visitors around my garden. I graft in on Limber pine root stock so it should have more tolerance to alkaline soil conditions, does well in the shade here in the sunny west. Growth rate: 2-6"/year. Laporte Avenue Nursery text.

Thunderhead is first in the collection.
Kevin, till now we had no infos, that Sid made anything with Abies koreana.
Nate, Its good. Denver is far enough from Connecticut to collect of his selections, but as I guess, its a great work there for the american conifering.I wish to all american breeders to send a copy of their finds to Denver BG. They give attention for. Thanks Denver.

13 years agolast modified: 9 years agoPinus s. 'Sea Urchin'...one of my favorites. A very small cultivar when I purchased it 8-10 years ago. Never any issues. I took a 3 week vacation in August 2010. When I came back it was stone dead. Very dry/hot during that period. Obviously over looked by care taker and not watered. I also lost other valuable cultivars that will be hard to replace.
I will order another one.
