One of the southern yellow pines. To me, the needle length suggests Loblolly.

I agree, the needle length and the bright emerald green color make me think loblolly pine (pinus taeda) as well. They are in AR and follow the coast up to about central DE.

counting whorls .... it looks about 6 years old ... but its hard to tell in a pic ...

its interesting... that two years back or so ... it had a near two foot annual growth .... and then the last 2 .. much shorter... wonder what that is all about ...

of course .. i am not familiar with this specific pine.. so this is were you tell me... it has two flushes of growth per year ...

growing in the fence .. usually means.. some bird pre-fertilized it ... lol ...

Here is a pic from june 9th of this year. I has put on about a foot of growth since then.
It is definetely not 6 years old.
This thing grows very fast.

Not sure a pine seed would pass through a bird intact.

Yes, typical of the southern yellow pines...multiple flushes in any given growing season.

For Ken - Pines (most conifers actually) usually have two methods of dispersal. Wind dispersed (small seeds with a wing) or animal dispersed (larger seeds) through the caching of seeds for later use (they forget where they put them). In the east, squirrels & mice are the usual culprits. In the west, some bird species will cache seeds as well.

If the seed is ingested, it's toast. All the nutritional value is in the seed.

From what little I know, the speed of growth suggests loblolly. That's supposed to be a very fast growing tree.

It's probably still small enough you could move it. Or use it as a Christmas tree.

There are so many types of birds out there...isn't there always the possibility some bird that isn't a seed specialist might gobble a bunch of seeds and not be able to digest all of them? Or I suppose a squirrel might like to run along the fence and stop every so often to bury things....
