Planting underneath ponderosa pines

We moved into a house that is surrounded by ponderosa pines that are 20+ years old gauging by the size. I would like to put in a lawn in, but I am unsure if a lawn would grow under the tree's drip line, which is about 6 feet on each side of the tree. They have lost a lot of needles due to extreme drought. I am putting in a sprinkler system in, so that may help the trees some, but I wonder if 1) will all the needles affect the soil chemistry and hinder plantings underneath the trees. 2) will grass sprout with the needles covering the area and 3) what would be another option to grow that would be low maintenance for ground cover?
