mulch deeply.. and even a little excessively .. but not too near the trunk .. and do NOT LET IT DRY OUT.. ALL NEXT SUMMER ... short of drowning it.. with bad drainage ...

if anything was perfect.. it was timing... and that is 90% of the battle ...

i think its an optical delusion ... but insure the soil is at the same trunk level as before ...

if hemlock roots.. i have no clue.. you might try propagating a few pieces... if that timing is right.. so that if the big one fails.. you might have it in babe form ... a propagation chamber can be a simple as the pic below .... and yes.. there is my washer/work station again.. lol ...

and that was just stuff i had laying around ... i was winging it based on some superficial research ...

You are right about the pet- it's like an ugly dog- but you still love it, and it's pretty ugly but I like it. I tried to root it but no luck I will try again if it lives. Supposedly difficult. I will need to water all winter it seems, as the soil was dust dry. I will hand water for now until I run a line out there and hopefully we will get the old well working for next summer- city says water rates will DOUBLE next year!
