You might have to be more specific about your growing zone for better suggestions. Connecticut, though not a BIG state, does range from gardening zones 7 to 6 (if not 5b). I have deer big time! So, I know you can have a diverse garden. But it really depends on your zone. i use these taller evergreen shrubs and trees that are not eaten by deer...but deer rutting is an entirely different matter, and they may rut trees that they would NEVER EVER consider eating.

Japanese Holly (even these got nibbled on in the Winter of 2013/2014!)

Rhododendrons (some report these are eaten by deer, but I have never seen this...deer can have regional taste preferences!)
