Okra, sweet potatoes, cowpeas.......

Ditto on "Okra, sweet potatoes, cowpeas......." A cover crop? Or start some "late" tomatoes? I started some tomato seeds last week to plant in July and they came up in 4 days. Most years they will produce a good crop after the old ones have stressed out from the summer heat and quit producing very well. I have planted summer squash this late in the year and had good results also. Pumpkins also do very well.

I'm also in zone 7, ikea, also just pulled up some lettuce and spinach. I put in summer squash, pumpkins, butternut squash and okra. Bush beans do well for me this time of year too. Pole beans don't seem to take well to mid summer in the middle Atlantic. Oh, except for yard long or asparagus beans. I just put in a tepee of those too.

You could plant a second crop of cucumbers, so that when the first crop peters out, you'll have more coming on. I am going to plant my second crop, which will be picklers, tomorrow.

I wholeheartedly second the motion for cowpeas. They are my favorite summer crop next to tomatoes.

I have a stash of long bean seeds that I got at a seed exchange. That could be fun to grow if I can manage to build some structure for it. So beets and carrots are out until late summer, eh?
