Weekend Trivia: Saturday

Good morning cottagers. Happy Saturday. I was up early, but have been fooling with my school computer which doesn't seem to want to let me sign in on the Cottage Forum! Very weird. All the others I tried worked, but I kept getting an error message here! So, thank goodness for Apple computers.

The brain drain is continuing in Northern Virginia, specifically in this house. I did, however, come across some fun terms in one of our reference books that seem apropos to this group (well one or two of these anyway). It is nice to have a library in which at least some of the books have worth. No wonder Chuck spends so much time down there!

I suppose we all know what a bibliophile is and I supect we all could be described as lovers of books . Can't imagine suffering from bibliophobia. Here are a few more. See if you can guess their meanings.

1. biblia abiblia

2. bibliobibuli (no, not the words from the song sung by Cinderella's

fairy godmother-teehee)-hint: plural....people who...

3. biblioclasm or biblioclast

4. bibliotheca

5. bibliophagist (not sure if this meaning is literal or not, but if not, I

am one in the summer when I have time)

I will be back with clues for the ones you need help identifying..if any. I think some of these are just fun to pronounce. Now, to figure out how to use them in sentences....

    I have a few guesses to put on the table.

    I think maybe ...
    one of them is a place?
    one of them involves devouring?
    one of them involves destroying?
    one of them involves creating books about books?

    I reserve the right to change my guesses when the more intelligent answers start rolling in. :)

    I'm with TM's third choice on one of them but I'm in the dark for the rest.

    lol. what a great list! Even better than a summer reading list - something I have not taken time for in years. I am printing this off and taking it to work!!

    Don't need many clues, do you?!

    TM, the word bibliogony means production of books, so none of mine has to do with creation of books. All your other guesses (and Annette's agreement) are on the mark.

    Meant to add biblioklept since I suspect everyone has been one by accident from time to time when friends share books.

    I suspect we might have slightly differing opinions on what constitutes #1. I would put those formulaic romance novels in that category, but there are many who would not do so. For #2, I am not sure how that is possible or why it might be considered a negative-unless one were focused exclusively on biblia abiblia. ;)

    biblioklept, ummmmmmm, failure to return borrowed books :).

    The first one sounds like it might be books that are not books, but I don't know exactly what that means.

    Another guess, #5 for want of a better term a bookworm ?

    Annette, ha, that works both literally and figuratively, doesn't it!

    TM, could be a matter of opinion???

    OK, home from work. Forgot to take my print-out. More wasted paper. Anyway, I am going to post this before I look at everybody else's, to see how I'm doing.

    1. a book about books?
    2. people who love books?
    3. like an iconoclast - a snob about real books?
    4. a library - I really should know this one!
    5. literally, a book eater, or a voracious reader.

    Now, to see how I've done.

    OK, so wrong about #1 - maybe nonfiction, or all Harold Robbins novels?? I like the bookworm for #5 - perfect!!

    Hmm...not sure how I'm doing on the others!!

    Well, some might consider Harold Robbins novels to be an example of #1... ;)

    For #3, try re-reading TM's post for a clue.

    Final guesses:

    1. Lousy books
    2. Book collector?
    3. Destroyer of books
    4. Library
    5. Book eater
    6. Book stealer

    That's my best shot.

    1. biblia abiblia=worthless books or literature
    2. bibliobibuli=people who read too much and have few or
    no other interests
    3. biblioclasm=the burning or destruction of books
    biblioclast=one who burns or destroys books
    4. bibliotheca=library
    5. bibliophagist=devourer of books
    6. biblioklept=one who steals books

    So, ***** out of six stars for TM
    *** out of six for Nancy (maybe **** if we go with Harold Robbins)
    ** out of six for Annette who didn't get back, but probably deserves more!

    Here are a few others:
    bibliopole=a bookseller
    bibliopegy=bookbinding as an art
    bibliomania=a passion for collecting books
    bibliotaph=one who hides or hoards books
    incunabula=books printed before AD1500

    Thanks for playing everyone. There will be a quiz on Wednesday! ;) Have a marvelous Sunday.

    Sorry to have missed this last week. The only one I knew was biblioklept. I remember reading about a local man stealing books throughout the US a few years back. His house was full of books.
