I am making the assumption that my Canadian imaginary friends Nancy and Annette watch US programming on tv. Is that right? If not, you will probably be defeated by this question. Sorry if that is the case.

I remember seeing this at the time and ABC showing it often later, such agony. His earlier effort was beautiful.

yes, he was the athlete who was chosen as "the agony of defeat" for all those years on the ABC Wide World of Sports show. They changed the faces on the thrill of victory sequences, but I guess they never found a more dramatic agony of defeat! The good news is that, although it looked like an awful crash, he wasn't hurt.

I would not have got it without the good hints, esp. from mnwsgal.
