Any one cook on a pro style range?

| Well, we've finally decided to do it - a kitchen remodel. It is in the planning stages now but we should get started on it in a couple of months. I am looking at Wolf, Dacor, Thermador, and Viking. Do any of you have first hand experience with any of these? Or do you have close relatives or friends who use one? I'm not looking for anecdotal opinion - that isn't in short supply on the kitchen forum. ; )
We are putting in Hickory floors downstairs, will start in the living room and work our way towards the kitchen on the other side of the house. I want to have the range, or range cooktop in the cabinet, before that floor goes in so I need to make up my mind SOON! I am leaning heavily toward Wolf since I have several friends with them and no problems. But I want to explore my options, too.
Thanks for any help you can give!

We upgraded from a 1940's Home Comfort dual fuel (wood and LP) range two years ago. I did extensive research on the subject of 48" ranges, and ultimately selected the Dacor dual fuel 48" range for the following reasons: 1) 6 realistic, useable full-range burners - THE V, W, T, AND OTHER HAVE 6 BURNERS, BUT ALL ARE IN A SMALLER AREA, WHICH MEANS THAT YOU CANNOT USE TWO LARGER POTS OR PANS SIDE BY SIDE. A COUPLE OF TIMES A WEEK OUR FAMILY WILL USE ANYWHERE FROM 2-4 OR 5 BURNERS AT THE SAME TIME, WITH ALL SIZES OF PANS - SOMETHING JUST NOT REALISTICALLY POSSIBLE ON THE OTHER RANGES WITHOUT CROWDING ONE OR THE OTHER OFF OF THEIR RESPECTIVE BURNER RINGS 2) larger griddle which is moveable and removeable - AGAIN, THE V, W, T, ETC, ETC ALL OFFER AN 11" FIXED GRIDDLE PACKAGED WITH THEIR 6 OR SO BURNERS, BUT REALLY TRY MAKING EGGS AND PANCAKES AT THE SAME TIME ON THE SAME GRIDDLE FOR MORE THAN 2 PEOPLE, AND YOU COME TO REALLY APPRECIATE THE DACOR'S 14" GRIDDLE. WHEN IT COMES TIME TO CLEAN UP, YOU LET IT COOL, LIFT IT OFF AND CARRY IT TO TO SINK WHERE IT CLEANS UP 100% EVERY TIME WITHOUT EVER SCRATCHING OR LEAVING PERMANENT MARKS OF ANY SORT. LASTLY, THE ABILITY TO MOVE THE GRIDDLE FROM LEFT TO CENTER TO RIGHT - OR OFF COMPLETELY - GIVE YOU THE MAXIMUM FLEXIBILITY. 3) at 500 Deg F in the oven, there is NO area that you can touch on the door, sides, etc. which is very warm, much less hot. DO NOT TRY THIS WITH ANY OTHER RANGE - THERE ARE TOO MANY REPORTS OF CHILDREN BEING BURNED BY TOUCHING A DOOR OR SIDE SURFACE OF SOME OTHER RANGE. 4)Heat-up: others may do this, but I can turn on our Dacor oven from a cold start and be at 350 Deg F in 7 minutes or less! Dacor does this by turning on the bottom electric element AND the gas broiler - very clever and SO MUCH appreciated! Other foodies who visit and witness this feat are astounded. Again - the other makes may do this as well, I do not know... We are a family of 6, who really enjoy preparing great food. Ultimately, many people will choose some of the other makes just for their kitchen presence or color of knob - and in the majority of these cases, they will never use more than 1-3 burners at one time. If that's the case, that is great for them. I wanted to give this feedback from a realistic perspective for those who will actually put one of these ranges through it's paces (at least on a home based level). | I bought a prostyle wolf 36" residential range at a local dealer last Dec'06 and have had nothing but problems with it. Yeah Yeah Yeah. I'm sure we've all heard that line before. THE dealer, distributer and manufacturer, all 3 have passed my complaint on down the line and it has come back to me twice in full mode full circle fashion, great, HOWEVER, with no fixing the problem. This is heavily about my purchase of a brand new 6,000 range I recently discovered to have NO product rating plate. (serial number plate) I filed a complaint with all three last October asking in good faith for a replacement range but this time, haha, WITH a serial number plate attached, but they all pass the blame to the next person, and the next person. Will someone please assume some responsibility. Nope. Listen, you'd expect SubZero would respond to a problem of this nature immediately. So far, they have been unable to produce positive results, costing me time and money. Also, this factory sealed carton range came with a defective griddle thermostat and a few other problems in which the dealer was very slow to comply, which aggravates me. They all say the same thing, you know the old business line they care and value me as a customer. Ok, so prove it. Think of it this way, when you buy a $7.99 mr coffee maker from walmart does it have a serial number stamped on it? Yes, everytime. Now, here we have a 6,000 dollar high end appliance with o serial number on it and I want a replacement or refund and they give me a hard time. If you plan to purchace a SUBZERO or WOLF range, with hood and fan for over $8,000, expect the same horrible treatment. Me? Never again, even if they send a replacement. Way too late now, too many dead ends, too many negative conversations. Permanantly dissatisfied. Lost an otherwise good faith customer. Want to chat about your experiences with Wolf or their dealer? Then bring it on. It's time to play the cards on the table. Let's chat. |

| I have cooked on both a Viking and a 48 inch Wolf. Had terrible problems with the Viking. The guy would come and fix it and it would work for a week. Replaced also. Terrible customer service. When I'd explain how often the repair guy was out, they really didn't care. Just shrugged and said that they have a real high demand for their appliances (read: quality control is abysmal). We then moved and I inherited a Wolf. I had some concern as my friend said hers was hot w/the oven on...Since this house has a Dacor wall oven, we really only use the cooktop. Night and day between the Wolf and the Viking. I think since builders put in Vikings in houses to sell them as upscale appliances, the quality's really gone down. If you have a choice, I'd run to the Wolf. Never had a problem w/it, its 4 yrs. old. |

| LOL! I was pretty surprised and amused to see this post come up again. Did any of you posting recently look at the date? It's been almost 2 years since I posted it. ; ) Bought a Wolf and couldn't be happier. You might want to check out the appliance forum if you have more you'd like to share. Great knowledgeable group over there. |

| ahhh the kitchen remodel! Mine is almost done and I now have all this knowledge about sinks, cooktops, faucets knobs that I'll never use again! I flirted with Viking, toyed with Wolf (evened howled at the mention of his name), liked the Dacor griddle... but in the end went with Whirlpool. Why? I don't really cook that often or that well! Did I really need to spend $2,000.00++ more for 18,000 BTUs? No... I can wait the extra three minutes for the pasta. But they're sure pretty and I still pine wistfully for the big knobs on the side! |

| Good Morning: This is my first post, as I'm blessed to be getting an old Tahoe cabin to remodel. I'm having the most trouble deciding on the gas range. I want a range that looks like it's been around for a long time. I've looked at Bertazonni, Cornufe, Aga Legacy, and Thermadoe Pro with a custom hood of stainless and black with rivets. I've had a gas Viking range for 20 years, and have had no problems with it, but don't want to use same kind again, and they aren't making them like they use to 20 years ago, or so it seems. I would appreciate any advice from you pros that I can get. Our Lake Tahoe home is a second home, so would like to stay with a reasonably priced range. I'm looking for 36". Thanks in advance, Katie |

| Katie: I know it's been a bit since you asked about Aga Legacy, but I feel I must post this for anyone else who comes along. We bought a Legacy 4 yrs ago and have hated it ever since. Looks great, that's all. 1st, the range burners don't heat evenly- when we have a saute pan on, the rt side of the pan cooks hotter, we've tried adjusting the feet etc, but to no avail. Also, since it has 2 separate ovens and a separate broiler you would've thought we would have realized that meant there would be no full size oven. Can't fit a standard baking sheet, let alone a turkey in any of them. The larger oven also doesn't heat evenly. A sheet of cookies comes out wonky. I have to stand by and turn the sheet every 3-4 mins. to make sure all the cookies are the same color. Also the kickplate falls off constantly even tho we attached a super strong magnetic to it. The range top is very hard to keep clean. The only thing we like about this stove are it's looks and the separate broiler, which by the way works great. We are moving in 2 weeks and I can't wait to get a new stove for our new place; the Aga is conveying. If you have any recommendations for our NEW stove I would love to hear about them. |

| Just thought I'd pipe up with my opinion of the Aga Legacy. I have the 36" electric smoothtop version. I've been cooking on it for about a year, and I LOVE it. I haven't had any problems with uneven cooking at all. At first I thought the rangetop took too long to heat up (it took me over 10 minutes to boil a pot of water), but then I figured out it was my cheap cookware that was the problem. Using a high-quality tri-ply pan makes all the difference in the world in that regard. Doesn't need to be All-Clad either, I've had good results with less expensive Cuisinart and Circulon. I haven't had any problems with the small oven size either - made a 19 lb thanksgiving turkey in the "big" oven last year and it turned out picture-perfect and delicious. I have found I use convection for almost everything now. The toekick does come off rather easily, as tiad said. I don't find it happens so much in daily use, as when I clean the floors. Which doesn't happen often. ;) |
RE: Any one cook on a pro style range?

| Have you tried the AGA PRO+? its a 36' range with 5 burners and dual fuel. The Oven is self clean too and heats up from cold in under 8 minutes. I like the divider panel that comes with it as it divides the oven in 2 when there are only a few to cook for. AGA claim it saves up to 30% of energy usage and it stores away in the drawer under the range when not in use. The Telescopic shelf is a must have for me now, so easy to get big food items like a turkey in and out. |
