Weekend Trivia: Sunday

thinman

Good day, dear cottagers. Things are still dry here, but boy, are we in a streak of beautiful summer weather, the kind where shorts and a t-shirt are all you need for a comfy day. Not too hot - just right.

Have you heard of Charles Osborne of Anthon, Iowa? In 1922 the 29-year old was preparing to slaughter a hog, when the 350 pound beast fell on him. This caused him to suffer from a condition that persisted until he was 97, when he apparently snapped out of it, making him a Guinness World Record holder.

Hints will follow.

Good morning TM!! Another gorgeous day here! I could use a little less heat, but otherwise, perfect.

As to the question, do turkeys sometimes cause the same reaction?

Oh dear, TM. I think I came across this during the school year...or maybe looking for a trivia question? I think I used it as a "On This Day in History" page that I posted outside my office every day. I used it to commemorate the day he woke up.

I will watch your clues to make sure I am right, though. Good question. :)

Nancy - maybe, if a 350 pound turkey fell on you, it might cause the same reaction, but probably not. As for eating turkey, I can't say it wouldn't, but I don't know that it would. Definitely possible though. :)

Surgeries were tried, but they didn't help Osborne. He died at 97 due to complications from ulcers.

So a 350-pound turkey might not have the same effect, you say...hmmmmm. Snapped out of it made me think of an awakening.

    Can I give clues, too?

    Hello all,
another beautiful day here too. We are taking the day off from home repair :)
    So on to the fun!
Nancy has obviously tried my cooking. I remember when my kids were young they asked why our thanks giving turkey was always so dry? I told them that that's the way daddy likes it. lol
So Hiccups is not the answer.
I once saw an episode of the Flintstones, were everyone kept hitting Fred on the head. Out love of course
    am I getting close?

I thought turkey makes us sleepy.

Holding my breath here TM waiting for permission.

    Go for it, Cynthia. Please.

Also, all I know about turkey is that it used to be thought to be sleep-inducing. I was basing my comment on that only. Just so you know. :)

    Hmmmm,
so maybe it's not amnesia. Maybe I should rethink older guesses.
I never was quite convinced Turkey really did make one fall asleep. It's such a popular lunch meat. Over eating does make me tired though.
    Just babbling here lol

Well, something is making me sleepy today. Maybe it is that I only had two cups of tea this morning, or maybe it is because I didn't add a spoonful of sugar.

Have you ever been so lost in thought, that you jumped and were scared out of your wits just because someone walked into the room? Phew. Back to normal now. I have painted color samples on the wall downstairs and I am trying to decide which green will work in that bedroom. Not sure I am wild about any of them, but I will choose one by tomorrow. Rainy days are predicted, so I figure it is a good time to paint.

Did you all ever see the movie "how to train your dragon?"
It's so cute. The babies in my family, think the lead character is the cartoon version of my son John. We can't watch it with out the little ones running to the tv, pointing and saying "look, it's John, John" too funny!

not babbling this time(I hope) lol

OK, it's pretty clear that Cynthia has it.

Laura is revisiting an old answer and that's probably good, though I don't know anything about How To Train Your Dragon.

Nancy is still thinking, I believe.

So a good scare would do the trick? Boy,I thought that you had ignored Laura's post about the Flintstones cause it was wrong!!

Off to watch 'The Fall' - anyone else watching that new British mini-series??

    Nancy.

I'm pretty sure that you three have it figured out now. The poor guy had hiccups for 68 years.

    for each of you!

I could have given better responses if I had known a few things: Does eating turkey give you hiccups? Did Fred Flintstone keep getting hit in the head because he had hiccups? Did the dragon have hiccups?

Sorry if my replies were a little bit substandard.

Thanks for playing trivia, my friends.

I'm just thick, TM! I thought it was a coma, so was going for the dreaded Thanksgiving 'turkey coma'. I cannot imagine having the hiccups longer than an hour - this must have really affected his quality of life!

    Thanks for the fun.

I am with Nancy on this. How in the world could he stand that? Anyway, fun question, but no stars for me since I already knew the answer. Funny that it was noted on the On This Day list of events.

I didn't know about the Flintstones or Dragon references either. Can't believe I didn't remember Fred's hiccups-used to watch that show every week-Friday night, I think!

Have a wonderful week. No rain today, so I will delay painting and get outside instead. Yippee.

Hope Bobbie is having a great vacation and Annette is recuperating. Miss you both.

Thanks for the stars and the fun!

My turkey is so dry .... my kids call it the gravy sponge. It has been known to induce hiccups. lol.
Fred Flintstones had amnesia, and they thought if they hit him over the head he would get his memory back. Or maybe that was a bugs bunny episode. Either way, that guess was wrong.

Hiccup, is the name of the main character in the movie 'How to train your dragon' cute movie.

Thanks for clearing those loose ends up, Laura. I didn't know how to respond when you wrote So Hiccups is not the answer without giving it up.

    TM,
In my mind, "answers" are direct statements of certainty.
My sentence clearly declared that I thought it was not the hiccups. :( lol
You definitely made the right call. Had I truly believe that was the correct answer to the trivia question, I would have ~tried~ to answer without giving away all the fun.
Good game! and I got stars! ( go me )
    thanks:)

Had a great time at the reunion. The mountains were so cool that I wore a sweater or jacket much of the time.

It was fun following along but couldn't maintain connection long enough to post.

Thanks, TM & Cynthia for fun questions and clues.
