Weekend Trivia -- Saturday

Double, double, toil and trouble,
Fire burn and cauldron bubble.
Happy Halloween, dear cottagers. I hope the witches, ghoulies, and ghosts stay away from you tonight, except for the cute little ones
Speaking of witches, you probably know that near the end of the 1600s witch trials were held in Salem, Massachusetts. Today’s trivia question is this: How many witches were burned at the stake as a result of the witch trials? The closest answers will get the most stars.

HaPpY HaLlOwEeN !! to you as well, TM. I'll have a cutie pie witch and a Rita Skeeter on the loose tonight. Hopefully it will stop raining in time for Trick or Treating. I do believe I know this one.... I'll check back later if the ghouls allow. BBH |

| ... and a HAPPY HALLOWEEN right back at you TM, hope it is a safe and fun night for all the little trick or treaters out there. It's hard to believe October is on the way out, it went sooooo fast. Hmmmmm, as to today's trivia answer, none comes to mind at the moment, but I'll be hanging around to see what others think it might be, later..... Annette |

| Happy Halloween! I will be rigging up a child gate across my front door to keep my "little one" safe--I have a kitten who looks just like your image above, TM! She arches her back that way when she's trying to intimidate my slippers. I am just as unsure as aftermidnight, and she's a clever person. Whatever answer she settles on, I agree with! |

| I'm going to hang around too. Maybe I will send TM an email. Janie |

| I do believe that none were burned at the stake. At that time, they used a different method of capital punishment, which many GWers have alluded to in their answers. Happy Halloween, TM! I am looking forward to the little ones tonight. |

Hee-hee!! Yes, I remember from a long time ago visit there, they used a form of water torture!!!! It was a no win situation!! Windy, windy here - all the witches better tie their hats on, but the rain has stopped, at least!! Happy All Hallows Eve!! My black cats will be inside, by the cauldron fire tonight. He-he-he-he-he-he!! Nancy. |

| None...and, unlike Dorothy's wicked witch, they didn't melt when tested! Waiting for our little witches et al to arrive now that it is starting to get dark. They'd better hurry-I've already had two treats myself! Hope everyone has lots of wee visitors. Unfortunately, we don't usually get too many-which is why it is safe for me to dive into the candy-we always have leftovers!. |

Oh right, dunking. When I arrived in Bermuda years ago via schooner we watched the locals re-enacting the process with a dunking chair. If you lived you were a witch and if you died you were innocent. now you have to wonder who thought that one up. But...the question was how many were burned, T man are you being trickish ? |

| As he always does, leaving us hanging!!! lol. I have the Skull and cross-bones at my door, as I have a nasty case of the flu that I do not want to share. I have promised the ghouls more next, in payment!!! |

None. Hope everyone had a safe and fun evening. Poor Nancy, I hope you have a quick recovery from that nasty flu!!! |

| Well, I think there might have been some that were burned. I will say 2 were burned, just to give a number. But I think most of them were hanged. Get well soon, Nancy! Janie |

| Well, yes, I was being trickish, Martha. They didn't burn anyone at the stake, but instead, the witches (14 women and 5 men)were hanged. One man who refused to submit to a trial was "pressed" to death by large rocks in an attempt to get him to agree to a trial. Some of the accused died in jail.
Wikipedia has a pretty long entry on the witch trials, and I thought it was really interesting. The trials were truly courtroom legal proceedings, with arguments about what kind of evidence could be admitted, and so forth. for Annette, Jani, Dawiff, Cynthia, BBH. Did I miss anyone?
