Weekend Trivia: Saturday

Good morning all! Today we are having rain. We had rain all day and night yesterday. We had rain on Thursday for the whole day, too. I am soooo happy! I just wish it had been spread out through July, August, and September. Not that I am complaining, mind you. I will take it now with pleasure!

Today's trivia is interesting, I think, but I am having a difficult time thinking of good clues. Nonetheless, onward! Color photography was developed first by using a three-color prescription from an idea proffered by James Clark Maxwell. Thomas Sutton took the first picture using that idea ("From his studies of color vision, Maxwell wrongly determined that any hue could be made by mixing only three pure colors of light - red, green and blue - in proportions that would stimulate the three types of cells to the same degrees that the "real" colors did. However, despite the imperfection of his theory, millions of colors can be visualized by this model. To emphasize that each type of cell by itself did not actually see color but was simply more or less stimulated, he drew an analogy to black-and-white photography: if three colorless photographs of the same scene were taken through red, green and blue filters, and transparencies ("slides") made from them were projected through the same filters and superimposed on a screen, the result would be an image reproducing not only red, green and blue, but all of the colors in the original scene."). What object did Sutton photograph?

I will be back with clues. Off to think up more than the one I finally thought up. ;)

Well there - my pumpkin pies are in the oven, with not too many screw-ups! I'm not the sharpest tack first thing, but today is the day we take pie, tomorrow we take salad, and I had that reversed. I make a custardy pie, and almost forgot to put the eggs in the 2nd one. Remembered in time, but what a mess. Oh well, they will taste good and I can tart them up with whipped cream!! ;-))

Cyn, I have not idea, and need clues big-time.

Oh, I love Thanksgiving whether yours or ours. I can spell the aroma of pies cooking. It is just such a pure holiday, not tainted by commercialism. Now, I do love a beautifully and colorfully wrapped gift, but pie...well, hands down winner there.

I don't know the answer yet, but I have actually done the experiment with taking three B&W photos through red, green, and blue filters. It has to be done with B&W slide film so you get a positive image on the film instead of a negative. That film used to be available, but may not be anymore. Being a teacher helped, so I could get my hands on three slide projectors, though it was tricky to get the three images perfectly superimposed. It actually worked. The result was a photo with the correct colors, although they weren't very intense - kind of washed out looking. I took a picture of our local harbor here, but if I were going to do it again, I would pick an object with very bright intense colors. Sutton probably chose something like that.

    Hmmmmm...a colourfully wrapped gift?

Nancy - who is heading out, but taking her new-fangled tablet with her. We'll see how this all works!!

    Yes, he did, TM.

It seems that our school has a fall field day. Very odd. Every school I have ever worked at had field day in the spring. My last school did away with awards at the various games. Some schools award every student these days. Interesting how things change. I still have some of my awards that I found in a treasure box I had when I was a child. So fun.

Cynthia, who seems to be spending the day drying dogs and wiping muddy paws constantly since the wild one is here (his mama is on one of her Africa trips for work and papa has been working very long hours, so Koda has been stuck inside for the entire week and the week before).

I also need more clues. One colorfully wrapped package wouldn't necessarily give a range of colors. Maybe a Christmas scene with a tree and many packages?

I am working in the gardens today, planting some late bargains and doing garden cleanup. Have a small Pagoda dogwood to transplant and a few potted shrubs as well. We've had great weather in the 70s but back to more seasonal 60s this week. Rain expected Monday so much to do this weekend.

    Will check back later.

A landscape of the changing fall leaves would give a nice range of colors.

Wrapped packages and awards. Something to do with ribbons?

So, decided to watch "The Fellowship of the Ring" on this grey cool day. It would be fun to watch all three, but not sure I could last that long. Love the scene at the end of "The Return of the King" when Sam and Frodo are alone on the rock surrounded by lava and Sam says, in remembering back to the year before, "Rosie Cotton dancin'..." Of course, if you are a Tolkien fanatic, as we are, you will know what he says next about her hair and that should tie everything up nicely for you. If not, I will try to come up with more clues for those of you who need them. ;)

Not as quick as TM but now I've got it. She wore these in her hair.

I'm back inside as it is sprinkling and with the cool air and lively breeze it is a bit uncomfortable. May go back out to record a few plants that are in the holding bed so I know which to select and how to space them in my new bed. Need to warm up first.

I guess I'm still at ribbons. Is it a special color or pattern of ribbon?

Not at all knowledgeable about Tolkien, I'm afraid.

OK, home finally. Did not get a chance to even take my tablet out to try, as the conversation was lively. This is a good thing!!

So, ribbons, spring, maybe something like this. Just a guess. This was my Grandmother in England, as a child.

Woohoo for all of you and four stars, too! ****
Yes, Sutton photographed a ribbon. I came across this as I was researching tartans looking for a fun question. Here is the information, although you may find better sources if you explore.

The first color photograph made according to Maxwell's prescription, a set of three monochrome "color separations", was taken by Thomas Sutton in 1861 for use in illustrating a lecture on color by Maxwell, where it was shown in color by the triple projection method. The test subject was a bow made of ribbon with stripes of various colors, apparently including red and green. During the lecture, which was about physics and physiology, not photography, Maxwell commented on the inadequacy of the results and the need for a photographic material more sensitive to red and green light. A century later, historians were mystified by the reproduction of any red at all, because the photographic process used by Sutton was for all practical purposes totally insensitive to red light and only marginally sensitive to green. In 1961, researchers found that many red dyes also reflect ultraviolet light, coincidentally transmitted by SuttonâÂÂs red filter, and surmised that the three images were probably due to ultra-violet, blue-green and blue wavelengths, rather than to red, green and blue.

So, thanks for playing. I hope you have the opportunity someday to be discussing his or her work with a photographer, so you may nonchalantly toss this bit of knowledge into the conversation. Should that never happen, I apologize for adding to the clutter in your brain. ;)

Have a lovely day. It is still drizzling/misting here, so my happy mood continues unabated.

I may be insensitive to the solution, but what a fun question.

To digress, Cyn, which tartan were you researching?

Very interesting! I never knew some of these details. I wonder if the more modern B&W film that I used was more sensitive to red and green than Sutton's.

Thanks for the stars and the fun, Cynthia.

Thanks for the stars, Cynthia. Your information has nudged a memory and I believe that at one time I read or saw a documentary about this. Unfortunately my memory is often difficult to access and fortunately you are a good clue giver and I am a Tolkien fan and watched the Ring trilogy recently.

My son is a photographer so I may have a chance to work this info into a conversation soon.
