Weekend Trivia - Saturday

Good morning, dear cottagers and happy weekend to you. Are any of you in the northeast digging out from snow today? Martha? Patti? Leasa? Who am I forgetting? What crazy weather out there.

On to trivia.

I think this one might be tricky, but one of you smarties will probably get it anyway. At the end of the 18th century, one Lt. Henry __________, a British artillery officer, invented a new type of cannon shell that bore his name and was deadly against enemy soldiers. His two-syllable name is still used generically to refer to the products of devices like the one he invented. What was Henry’s last name?

I asked my son, the soldier, and he did give me the run-down on the subject. I had to ask, so I am not telling. Maybe later.

Good morning, no snow here in Hollywood North. I can only think of something like "buckshot" or maybe a similiar thing that sticks into you.M

My thought is "rifle." I know the rifling on a barrel is more commonly thought of with smaller guns, what we now call rifles, but I think the big guns also have rifled barrels.

Well you stumped me but DH knew this one, later.

Hmmm....I think I know this one, and the principle is still killing soldiers. Even in Afghanistan!! I'll lurk till later!

RE: Weekend Trivia - Saturday

Yup, Shrapnel!! Something that 'stays' with you. I never knew it was named for someone, though!

Wow, you got this one! It must be my excellent clues that did it. :-)

So let's see, who gets stars for this? Janie's son and Annette's DH for sure, along with Nancy, Becky, and Libby. Martha?

Here they are -

Cynthia - did you know that there actually is a Henry rifle? Benjamin Tyler Henry invented it about fifty years later.

Good job all.

Too funny, TM! Didn't know that, but will add it to my storehouse of interesting facts which I can use to amaze and mystify my friends and family-can you hear them groaning?

one more thing...

Just to follow up, DH knew all about the Henry rifle and I got a short lecture on its use in the Civil War-knew that history, just not that it was the Henry rifle! Now, why couldn't he have come up with Shrapnel????

 o
RE: Weekend Trivia - Saturday

That one stumped me! I thought of Howitzer and then couldn't think of anything else. I wonder if Shrapnel ever regretted his invention's success at hurting people.
