You'll need to steel yourself for this one, Annette, and just realize that you'll need to head way east. Maybe there is public library nearby in the US where you could find the answer. ;)

I'll be back with more hints later-these may be too subtle if you aren't from this city sort of near me. Oh, and it is always listed among the most liveable cities in the US, unlike my hometown in the same state.

I should have come back last night to say my guess was Pittsburgh. This came to mind after reading Cyn's hint plus I just watched the movie 'The Valley of Decision' with Gregory Peck and Greer Garson not too long ago, I can thank good ol' TCM for that :).

Did you know that the -burgh ending is Scottish? Like Edinburgh. I've never quite figured out why so many people pronounce Edinburgh as Ed-in-burro. I guess it's because they hear the Scots throw that rolled r on the end, kinda like Ed-in-bur-ra, and use an oh sound instead. Maybe people are more enlightened where you live.

The -burg ending is German. In 1890, some official committee in the US decreed that all US city names would use the burg ending, so Pittsburgh dropped the h, at least officially, until 1911.
