Weekend Trivia -- Sunday

I was going to ask a question today about the Car Talk guys on NPR, thinking that Click and Clack, the Tappet brothers, would be a good answer to follow Frick and Frack. Since Stagerat and Nancy already let that cat out of the bag, I'll think of something else.

How about this - what is a tappet, and what is its connection to the names Click and Clack? Hmmmmmmm. I think that's too hard. No one would ever get it.

So let's go with question about different funny pairs. I'm thinking of pairs of characters who appeared in comics, as in newspapers or comic books. Each pair has a total of 8 letters if you add both names together. I can think of two of these pairs. How about you?

The names of the comics or comic strip:
1. _ _ _ _ and _ _ _ _
2. _ _ _ and _ _ _ _ _

DH says he thinks a tappet is in the distributor and that modern cars with fuel injectors may not have one...says it is a small part. He's not sure what they do, but without them you couldn't start the car-

So, on to the question...not as easy as it seems at first...the long and short of it is...I think #1 is M & J. Still working on the second one. Everything I've come up with is too long for that first three-letter name.

This will keep me out of trouble today as I search the memory banks...pretty cluttered in there!

Good Morning all, for once we didn't wake up to rain but they snow is in the forecast the next couple of days.

I also think the first one is M&J, and the second one T&J. These came to mind right away, spent a lot of time perusing the funny papers way back then. My favorite was Lil Abner, remember the Shmoos :o).

I think the tappets are the lifter arms? I once had a BF who said the tappets on the car were...rattling or something. This was a looong time ago, I'm not sure!

But I have no idea about the comic pairs, I'll work on that while gardening.

Didn't think of T&J-I think of them as tv cartoons, but that would work-unless you mean something other than what I am thinking of!

I love the schmoos, too! How can you not?!

'We have seen the enemy, and he is us' - I loved Pogo!!! And yes, the schmoos!! lol. Stage rat - yes, lifter arms, we'd have been better with that question.

T&J - yes, loved them, esp. the drink!! lol. Hmmm...M&J - I need to think about who they are.

Nancy.

Don't I wish, Nancy-LOL. All the teachers I work with on my team have mothers younger than I am! I remember reading Mutt and Jeff when I was in elementary school, but I am stumped on #2. I need more hints-or were they a comic strip before becoming Looney Tunes stars?

 o
RE: Weekend Trivia -- Sunday

M&F and T&J were both comic strips so everyone who guessed them wins. I'm guessing them too.

Cyn, don't forget comic books, Anyone remember The Katzenjammer Kids, Prince Valiant and Alley Oop from the comic strips. Enough already this is really making me feel my age LOL.

I got Mutt and Jeff while working outside, but I didn't get T and J until I read the hints on here. I don't know if I ever saw a M&J comic strip.

Was I really right about the lifter arms? Wow, amazing what the mind holds onto!

No surprise, the answers are

and

Tom and Jerry were more movie and TV cartoons than comic books, but they did appear in both.

for Cynthia, Annette, Nancy, Libby, and Stagerat.

As for tappets, they are little dealies that ride on the camshaft of an engine as part of the mechanism that opens the valves. I've never heard them called lifter arms, but they are sometimes called lifters, so lifter arms is pretty darn close, Stagerat! In the days before self-adjusting hydraulic tappets, they would have to be adjusted every so often or they would become a little loose and begin clicking. You may have heard of taking your car in to get the valves adjusted.
