Weekend Trivia -- Saturday

Happy weekend, dear trivia players. The firearm deer-hunting season is either in progress or about to start in many of our states and provinces.

Tomorrow is opening day here in Michigan. Deer damage here at ThinMan acres was so annoying this summer that I actually considered buying a license and getting my revenge by eating what ate my garden. I still have today to do that if I want, but it’s not going to happen - not this year anyway. Still, I’m holding a grudge against the hoofed devils, and I’d love to see their population reduced to more reasonable levels. We have 60,000 car-deer accidents every year in Michigan, which doesn’t make much of a dent in our deer herd of about a million.

But on to trivia. You probably know that deer shed and grow new antlers every year. In doing this they earn the top spot among mammals for what record-setting ability?

I see that this one hasn't exactly grabbed you all yet. To clarify the question, we are talking about the growing process of the antlers. How is the growth remarkable among mammals, and maybe among all animals, for all I know?

Sorry we have been so slow. I saw this and wrote a facetious answer that I decided was not funny enough, so I decided to keep thinking rather than posting (although I was giggling to myself-scary, huh?). My guess is that deer are the only ones who can't lie about their age (bucks at least).

I've been lurking too looking for hints. All I've come up with so far is antlers are grown to be used in the acquisition and protection (repel all boarders) of his lady love. Still lurking.

I think it might be what the antlers consist of although we have them we can't grow new ones, M

Mmmmmmm, is it bone, they have the ability to re-grow bone.

Me again :o).

 o
RE: Weekend Trivia -- Saturday

Okay, if I'm right, and we all know that how likely that is-LOL-think points. Although, I do like the idea of regrowing bone.

Hint: It's not what they do, it's how they do it, particularly how __________ they do it.

Evening all, what a lovely day we've had today!!
hmmmm, deer shed antlers and grow new ones every year, each year they grow bigger - so if it's not what they do, but how they do it - maybe how quickly they do it or how often??

OK, I've been thinking about this all day. Antlers, like hooves, fur, hair, and nails (on humans) are all made of keratin, as is the outer layer of our skin. It is genetically purposed for each task...so, my initial thought was, it can't be that easy. My second thought is that is their swift ability to regrow the antlers/ie. produce the specific keratin necessary. That's my final answer!!!

Okay, my final answer is that every year their antlers grow larger than the last adding another point, so you can tell how old they are by the antlers. Probably not right, but can't figure out what goes in your blank, TM. I can't wait to see the answer, so I can dazzle and amaze my friends some day!!!

Cyn, fair enough, to grow it LARGER each and every year, as well as quickly.

RE: Weekend Trivia -- Saturday

The unique thing about deer is how fast their antlers grow. It is the fastest growing tissue of any mammal, and can grow over 1/2 inch per day. All the growth happens at the tip of the new antler in the form of cartilage that eventually ossifies (turns into bone). Once the antlers are mature, they are all bone, as opposed to animal horns that are bone in the middle and keratin outside.

It's a myth that you can tell a buck's age by counting antler points. With good nutrition, a two year old buck can develop a nice six point or better rack. They do generally get larger every year.

for BBH and Nancy, who both indicated that speed was a factor.

All these years...ah well.

Thanks, TM. Another good one!

Interesting that it is not keratin - I suppose cartilage would grow more quickly. I understand about the ossification process well enough - my finger cartilage has followed that process! lol. Thanks for the stars, I'm not sure I deserve all of them.

Nancy.
