Weekend Trivia -- Sunday

| I'm a little afraid that this question is too far afield for you, dear cottage gardeners, but it's all I can come up with for a follow-up deer question, so I'm going to ask it anyway. Please feel free to consult any testosterone-endowed friends or relatives that may be nearby.
The firearm of choice for deer hunters is generally a rifle, but in more populated rural areas, rifles are outlawed. Hunters there are allowed to use shotguns, and many do so with good success.
Since both are lethal weapons, why are shotguns allowed in these areas, but not rifles?
Hint: the answer lies in the first line of a traditional cowboy song.

| The travel range of the rifle is much farther than that of a shotgun. Therefore, if you shoot a rifle in a populated area, you could injure (or kill)someone, without meaning to do it, or even knowing you had done it. I think. Makes sense to me. but...the only cowboy song I could think of was "Mamas, Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys"... doesn't make sense to me at all.... I could think on it awhile yet. Everybody is still at church.... |

| Buckshot and cartridges and the like are a frequent topic of conversation here, as deer are everywhere and hunters frequently poach from the road, which is illegal. None of the cowboy songs playing on the jukebox in my head are appropriate to this question. Nell |

| I agree with dani, but haven't come up with the song yet. Will ask DH (who along with my cousin can sing the themes to all the old cowboy shows and I'm hoping he knows more than that for this one) when he gets home from the 5k race he is directing. |

| Good morning all, getting a late start this morning. I also agree with Dani. Shotguns have a shorter range therefore hunters are closer to their game, less chance of a mishap. Annette |

At my home on the _____, some discouraging words were heard, "where are all my socks?", so even though the skies are not cloudy all day, I'll be doing laundry. BBH |

| Well, I did think of that song (that plus Sweet Betsy from Pike and My Darling Clementine are about the limit of my cowboy song repertoire), but didn't pick up on TM's double-entendre-hint-LOL! Way to go blueberryhills! |

| Yes, I agree - it is the distance that can be travelled. I remember from somewhere that the bullet of an AK-47 can travel over a mile, and still be lethal. All the Elmer Fudds around here are out in full force - I can hear them off in bush. Lots of trucks on the side of the road, etc. Police closed part of my road home one night last week, as there were hunters shooting after sunset - a no-no here. They found a 70-year-old hunter in severe distress, who may have been the shooter. He died later in hospital - guess he was doing something he loved. The deer here are also rampant. I saw a huge buck - 10 points?? - on the side of the road the other night - if he'd moved onto the road, I would not be typing this! Maybe we should hire hunters to shoot both them, and the over-abundance of Canada geese, to feed the homeless and the food bank people. Nancy. |

| I know nothing about guns but I know old cowboy songs. 1. Oh give me a home/where the buffalo roam 2. In a cavern, in a canyon/excavating for a mine 3. I come from Alabama with a banjo on my knee 4. From this valley they say you are going etc. Don't know the answer but we could have a sing-song. :) Libby |

| I'm so literal-minded I thought there must be a song that explained the difference between a rifle and a shotgun. You know, a cowboy learning-song. :) Having dumped the ballistics expert, like the others here I think it's that shotguns have a smaller range. I'm guessing because instead of forcing one projectile a long way, it's sending lots of shot a short way, so you don't actually have to be a sniper to get a deer. Except maybe shotguns do "bullets" too, in which case having a smaller range means it would also have to be a smaller powder load or whatever they call it. You know, less gunpowder. There's a piece of land-trust land near me, in between a subdivision and a business, where they only allow hunting by cross-bow. That may be more for the noise factor than safety, cross-bows scare me! |

| LOL stage rat-"cowboy-learning song" Funny, Libby. I'd forgotten how many I know-like #3 and 4. Shall we all step outside and begin? |

| As Janie so quickly and accurately said, the answer is the range. Rifles used in deer hunting fire bullets that can go several miles, though they would have to be aimed upward a lot farther than would be normal.
Shotguns, when used for deer hunting, generally fire a bigger and slower projectile called a slug. See numbers 39 and 40 in the picture. Its range is a lot shorter, though it is known to carry through brush better than high-velocity rifle bullets. So who needs testosterone? for Janie, Cynthia, Annette, BBH, Nancy, and Stagerat.
Thanks for playing, y'all. TM |

| Hey TM, was your hint that the ? was a little "TOO FAR AFIELD" for us? I just noticed that! You are so clever. Have a wonderful week. Cynthia |

| Wouldn't that have been a clever hint if I had done it on purpose? You're the clever one for thinking of it. TM |

RE: sad confirmation of trivia

| On our local news tonight, there was a report of two college students at a Virginia school who were shot by a hunter with a high velocity rifle. One was killed. Very sad and so stupid. |

| Man, why do they need those, if you can take a deer down with a shotgun? The long gun registry just died here in Canada - unless the gov't. falls before Spring. Oh well. You register a coupla tonnes of steel that moves you around, they want you to register your cat. I just don't get it. I know it wouldn't stop every nutbar, but it might save a life or two. Sorry Cyn - not good to hear. A sportcaster, locally, many years ago was shot in the station parking lot by someone with a .22 rifle - the cat or the car he might have dodged. Nancy. |
