cyn, I played clarinet. lol Had to learn a lot of crap...er stuff that had nothing to do with what I wanted to do. Annette has me doubting my answer. Hmmmm

The answer is indeed Adolphe Sax. It was in the 1840s, just like Sierra said. Sax designed quite a few instruments: a flute, a clarinet, valved bugles called saxhorns, a contrabass clarinet, and finally, a range of saxophones. Unusually, he developed lip cancer in the 1850s, but made a complete recovery.

for Sierra and Cynthia! Cynthia, it doesn't matter to me if you were being silly, you still got it. I didn't expect that anyone would guess the Adolphe part, but I thought someone might go with Sax. It still counts. :-)
