Resident Land Turtle - You'll Never Guess What He Likes to Eat!

Annie

Last week I was out filling the water basin around the apple tree. I had applied a thick layer of manure hay in an attempt to revive my poor drought-stressed tree. I needed to water it every other day to allow the manure and water to get down to the trees roots. When the basin was filled to the rim of the basin, I would move the hose over to the nearby shrubs and spray them, rinsing off the dust and giving them a drink, too. When the water around the tree had disappeared, I moved the hose back to the tree and filled it again. The cats had been romping nearby, always following me about the garden when I work. As I turned the hose back to the tree, something came out of the shrubs towards me and just caught my eye. Thinking it was probably one of the little cats who had been in the bushes where I sprayed, I turned to see not a cat, but a turtle! It was an Ornate Box Turtle and he was tripping out from under the bushes and heading straight for me! They are very shy creatures, so this amazed me. He immediately began gobbling up something on the ground near my feet. I was astonished to see him eating those, so I laid down the hose in the water basin, and ran as fast as I could into the house to get my camera. When I returned, he was stilled there and still eating. Great! I was able to get a series of photos of him eating. He gobbled them up like candy! I never knew these particular turtles ate these particular things, as they have a very specialized diet consisting mostly of insects, like June Bugs to name one. What an amazing thing to witness!

To find out what he was eating, go to my PhotoBucket account and see if you will be as surprised as I was.

Go back and read the titles and descriptions and you'll find out. ;)

I can't give you the answer because it will give it away for everyone else.

That turtle goes all over my place. I find him up in the potager and way up in the statue garden too. He gets around!

Here's a picture of another Ornate Box Turtle that frequented my place several years ago:

Same species, but with the yellow head instead of black and orange. I think he is very pretty! You can tell this one is a male - he has orange eyes. Females have yellow to brown colored eyes.

I took a series of photos of this turtle, too. My big fluffy gray Tabby, "Puddy Tat", was very intrigued by him. as was my dog, Mike. I got quite a number of very cute pictures of them.

I can post them if anyone is interested in seeing them.

We have another land turtle too. It is called, "Three-toed Turtle", for obvious reasons. Only three toes on each foot. They do not have the pretty colors or patterns on their shells - kind of mulkety-dung-green-brown, like the color of an army helmet. Think of an army helmet with legs, a head and a skinny little short tail, and you pretty much have it! (hehehe)

My close-encounters with the wildlife are part of what I enjoy most about working in my gardens.

Oh Annie, how marvelous to have such beautiful creatures come to visit. You were almost hand feeding him, before long he'll be trotting, I mean meandering along at your heels looking for handouts. We had a frog in one of our pools that used to wait for us to throw him worms, but a land tortoise, we don't have any around here, just a little bit envious.

Well, who would have thought it . . . candy for turtles!

Those are nice photos, Annie. I'd love to see some of your pets with him.

    Cool
My first MIL kept a land turtle of some sort as a pet in her house for years. I remember she fed him lettuce, but I don't know what else he/she ate. It just roamed around in the house, no box or cage. Of course my boys thought that was way cool.

Oh, I love turtles! Frogs too. I wish we had some around here. Adorable! Yes Annie, please post more pics!

I have to ask...how did he get the flowers down? Were there flowers on the ground, or petals dropping? Or did he bend stems down to get at them?
    So cool!

I loved your critter album. If I had more land and not surrounded by so many new neighbors, I'd have lots of critters, too. Thanks for sharing.
