Very lovely, but why did most not survived?

Many years ago when I knew nothing about gardening, I planted some from seeds and by the next they made tubers.

I really don't know why. The tubers were all the same size and condition and came from the same vendor. I planted in groups of six, closely 1.5 to 2 feet a part. The majority never broke ground.

Were these single tubers, if they were did these tubers have a piece of the old stem still attached? The new growth starts from an eye found where the tubers are attached to the stem. If they didn't have eyes they are what are called blind tubers and will not grow.

That I cannot tell you since I've never heard of blind tubers. See, after all these years here I still learn.

These eyes are hard to see if you don't know what to look for, when dormant they are almost unnoticeable, here's a link to a thread on the Dahlia forum that might be of some help. Each tuber you plant must have an eye or it will not produce.
