The large white (pale yellow) Daylily is 'Catherine Woodbury'. It is one of the most fragrant of the scented daylilies. She was one of my first to buy about 14 years back.

These two are so similar that I am not sure which is which.

I quickly fell in love with this Daylily, and took lots of photos of her blooms all summer. :)

Wild, native Oklahoma Prairie Larkspurs blooming behind. They are diminutive, but lovely. I did not plant them. They just came up in my garden - maybe from the hay.

A clump of little golden Stella de Oro blooming at the edge of the new (and unfinished) path leading down to the patio.

The wild Ox-eyed Daisies came from Vice President Al Gore's place in Tennessee. I am very proud that they not only survived the trip home in a paper cup, but bloom for me in wild abandon, self-seed and thrive in my garden every year. I now have them in two locations. and they are spreading.

I found this daylily at WalMart several years back. They came from Mexico. They were growing in containers. It didn't start blooming until the following year and I was so thrilled with them.

Your day lilies are absolutely incredibly gorgeous, Annie! I haven't so far had a lot of success with them but will try again after seeing yours.

I am very surprised tho that you deliberately planted ox-eye daisy as they are on the noxious invasive weed list here in BC Canada and I thought they were also considered that all over North America. In the area I live ranchers have lost entire pasture fields to those daisies - livestock won't eat them and supposedly no chemicals will eradicate them. We originally got them in loads of hay and they are now encroaching on our grazing land. I actually pay people to weed-whack them which slows them down but since they also spread by underground runners it won't stop them. Most of my neighbors do nothing so they will eventually take over unless something is developed to stop them.

Annie,Your daylilies are beautiful. Did you have to water them much. I especially love the next to last 1 with the Echinacea.Do you know the names of any of them?
I only stop by here now & then but I remember you have a lovely garden in spite of the drought.We are having a severe drought here,too.Last spring we had some moisture but there is none this year. Serious situation.

DAYLILY COLORS
The colors are indeed spectacular, aren't they? I just love them. It is especially amazing to realize that the original daylilies were all yellow to yellow-orange in color, and now, in a relatively short period of time, breeders have created all these amazing colors and color combinations, in doubles and with lacy edges or ruffles and some with starburst stripes in their centers, and the re-bloomer daylilies! Some have petals that fold out, some fold back and some look trumpet-shaped. Some are bizarre looking, kind of like spiders, and some look kind of like mums. Wow!

And to think that they bloomed like that for ME...HERE...in Oklahoma, and especially during a severe drought and summers with non-stop extreme heat! Amazing!

DO YOU WATER?
Yes, I water. Boy, do I - every day from sun-up to late at night, all summer long!
But the daylilies don't need to be watered as often or as much as say, my roses or more tender, delicate flowers, and probably not as much as you might think. They reserve a lot of moisture in their swollen roots. But you do need to make sure that when you DO water, water them DEEPLY and thoroughly. Sprinkling them or spraying them in the heat will not be sufficient. Their soil should remain slightly damp down at the roots depth, but never water-logged. (dig down into the soil between plants with a little hand spade from time to time to check it during drought and high temps). Pile on lots of mulch to keep their roots cool and soil moist.

THE MAINEST THING:
I do think that the "mainest thing" is to have good soil. That is most important for any garden. I work hard to continuously build up the soil on this hot, barren hill, especially in the flower gardens. Good soil = good plants. Good soil = good water retention and availability of nutrients. Good soil = cool roots in summer and warm roots in the winter. So, yes...Good soil = good plants.

I've got to get out there and water again in the next few days. It is so terribly dry. Everything, and I mean everything, is coated with powdery dust. I have been spraying the trees, shrubs and flowers, rinsing all the choking dust off of them so they can breathe.

I cannot keep enough buckets of drinking water for the wildlife, and fill the bird bath every day.

Every year I think if cannot possibly get much worse - that surely this dry spell and above normal temps will end. Surely Oklahoma will return to being "Green Country" again and all things will back to normal...and then Nature shows me that yes, it can get worse, and perhaps THIS will be the new normal.

God help us.

Your daylilies make me miss home. I see hardly any here - and only a couple varieties - they remind me of the USA in a big way. But while I'm a touch sad, I'm smiling too! Daylilies are so great.

What colour is your favourite? Mine would be either ivory with the green/yellow throats, like your gorgeous 'Catherine Woodward,' or my old standby less-elegant-but-perkier bright yellows, like Happy Returns and so on.

As a fan of yellow, daylilies are wonderful for delivering it, in many shades from ivory through to brights, my only problem with yellow is knowing which varieties are best as there are SO many! Talk about spoiled for choice! :)

Most of the daylilies (and irises) have now emerged from their winter slumber. I am getting excited that spring is nigh.
