Sharing some Snow

| Haxuan's thread made me think of sharing a contrasting picture. As you all probably know, the lower Midwest is in the midst of another winter storm. We are just getting snow. The birds are in a feeding frenzy.
I call this the Feeding Tree.
They are fighting for a landing spot on all the feeders. Sure glad we loaded up with seeds a few days before the storm hit. |

Wow! Those birds must be so appreciative! And you get to enjoy their beauty and color. :) I hope Haxuan will post a winter picture when we are posting summer ones!

Oh that "Feeding Tree" photo is wonderful, you should get it enlarged and frame it.

Glenda - awesome!! That is a lot of cardinals!! I get excited when I have 2 pair. Those shots are both frame-worthy. Nancy.

I have to agree, that photo should be framed! How are you attracting so many cardinals? We are lucky if we see two pair.

Oh, Glenda, what wonderful photos. I'm not fond of winter, but I love these pics. Nell

Great photos! We probably have gotten 2 inches of snow in only one hour here. It is supposed to snow for 24 hours -- if it continues at this rate, how deep will it be? I should have a contest on my blog to guess the snowfall depth! Cameron

I keep coming back to this post to look at that photo.

Great pictures, Glenda. It's interesting to me that your birds were in such a feeding frenzy during the storm. It makes perfect sense, but in my neck of the woods they seem to do the opposite. When we get slammed, all the birds disappear and I only see them at the feeder when the snow and wind have died down. I can hardly believe how many birds you have. Wow. Your birds are really lucky to have you, and clearly they know it. ThinMan

My DH and I were jumping up and down the other day when we had ONE pair of cardinals in our magnolia tree! Your feeding tree is absolutely spectacular! I love the way they all look so contented sitting in the tree.

Thanks everyone. We do nothing special; we put the feed out and they come. I counted 14 pair of Cardinals one day. If you see an adult male, you can bet there is a matching adult female. The group consists of White Crowned Sparrows, House Sparrows, nuthatches, downy woodpeckers, blue jays, American Goldfinches (in their olive winter drab), Tufted Titmice, Red Bellied Woodpeckers and a few Grackles. I haven't seen any Harris Sparrows this year. We have to fill the feeders every two days. I usually keep out suet cakes (DIY) but see I don't have any in the tree in this picture. I forgot the juncos and the Black Capped Chickadees. We have lots of fun watching them.

Great photos. I wonder if the birds feel the cold at all. Thanks for sharing. Xuan

Wow, what a flock of birds at your feeders and so many cardinals. We are in the same boat as far as winter weather. The snow began here Friday at 5pm and is still occurring this morning. Already have 6 to 8 inches of snow and in some places where it has drifted, it is over a foot deep. Birds are at my feeders but there must be 5 or so Blue Jays that are keeping the cardinals away here.

Wonderful picture. I love our cardinals. We don't have as many Blue Jays as we did several years ago. They are such fun to watch in the bird baths and fountain-too funny. I think West Nile practically wiped them out around here. I so enjoy snowy days like this. A lot of the birds sit on the deck all puffed up to keep warm, everything is so clean and quiet, and the yard looks magical-can't see those weeds-lol. Our snow started just when it was predicted (9 am), but we are supposed to have only 2-4" or 1-2" depending on the line of the storm. Lots of starlings (greedy things) at the feeders. I keep chasing them away, so the others can get their share and now they have all seemed to disappear. I am hoping we get as much snow as all our Tarheel and Virginia neighbors further south! Time to check the weekend trivia on the other side! Stay cozy all.

Glenda, beautiful pics! I have had a lot of cardinals this year also. Love to see my birds out at my feeders! It makes winter so less boring.

The other day I was on the phone and glanced out the window to see a flock of Cedar Waxwings in the ligustrums. When I hung up and grabbed the camera they were gone. :( I keep 3 safflower seed feeders and 2 thistle seed socks out during the winter months. This year I've seen Cardinals (male and female) eating from one of the thistle socks. They perch on a branch in the crape myrtle and reach over to get seeds. I'd never seen that before.

Glenda your Cardinals are soooo beautiful. We have lots of birds coming to our feeders but nothing as colorful. Great pictures. Annette

WOW, those are great pictures, I have never seen so many cardinals at one time. The birds have been busy at my feeders all day, but nothing like at your feeding tree. Thank for the beautiful photos. Carol |

Thank you for sharing those beautiful photos! I printed them off to show my mom. She's from Illinois and misses seeing cardinals in the winter. She will love these :)
