Winter storm rolled in

| It started to snow at 3pm.yesterday and snowed all night. Here's what I awoke to this morning. The Irish Juniper that has been a focal point in the middle of the stone courtyard has been split four maybe five ways, and two of my 4' DeGroote Spires are laying on the ground covered in snow. Ugh.

| We got it down here also. It's a beautiful snow to look at, but destructive. There is a heavy layer of slush under all the snow and it is going to get down to 12 tonight. A deadly mix for plants and travel. I hope your Irish juniper snaps back! Mickie |

| As awful as it is for the plants, keep an eye on your roofs. We had the same kind of big snowfall last year (right before Christmas) and one of our hay barns collapsed. We had to have friends come out on Christmas day and help us shovel the roofs on the house and other outbuildings. That same storm caused more than 20 store and warehouse roofs to collapse in Spokane...even one of the firestations collapsed as the fireman were trying to shovel snow off the roof. Luckily, most of the collapses happened at night, so very few people were hurt and the fireman heard the sound of the roof starting to give and were able to get down before it fell in. It's the weight of all that wet snow and it freezes and then keeps piling up. Flat roofs and those with less pitch (3/12) are most vulnerable. I hope all of you are safe during this storm! |

| We heard on the news of the storm heading your way, be careful, keep warm and stay safe. If you are out shovelling, pace yourself and don't overdo. Annette |

| We got the storm here in SE PA, have 24" of snow and its also pretty windy. Our arborvitae are all split open and dh has been outside trying to get the snow off of them. It looks so beautiful but it sure can be destructive. Hope everyone is safe and snug in their homes, take it easy with the shoveling. Carol |

| This has been a very weird winter! We've had no more than an inch or so of snow at a time and it usually melts off in a day or two. The worry here is that the plants don't have their usual winter blanket, so there will probably be a fair bit of winterkill this year. On the other hand, walking and driving are much easier than normal :-) It must be very hard to cope with all that snow when you're not used to it. Be careful! |

here in pittsburgh we got it bad too. On the news they said it was the worst in 60 years in our area! Our power was out since last night, just came back on not too long ago.The snow seemed to have broken the forcynthia hedge by my porch, so ill have an excuse to tear it out and add more flowers! heres 2 pics from my back yard!
this was the path to my car, that i shoved out, only to have a plow go by and push more snow around it! |

Oh my! I grew up at the tip of texas, on the TX/Mexico border. They grow citrus, cotton, sugar cane, bougainvilla, and other tropical flowers. I thought the term, cabin fever, was a figure of speech. I can now see how that would effect one. We had 2 days of sunshine and high 60 degrees days and it is now gray again, with more rain forecast for the next 5 days . They are forcasting sunshine on friday and saturday. It certainly is effecting my mood. We have already past the average rain fall for Feb. I'll try not to complain any more. Kathy |

| Your winter storm looks like our typical winter here in Ontario. Last year the snowbank reached our heads. This year, we only had snow up to our ankles... not even. All the more reason to protect your plants with mulching for such surprise winter storms. |

| Lilyfinch- How awful! We had two bad winters like that back to back and for the first time I dreaded winter this year. I usually love snow, but almost 100" last year was enough. This winter, we've had very little snow and mostly rain...it's very strange after the last two years. We're all expecting a storm like you just had. I'm so glad your power is back on. At least it's February and spring is going to be here soon :) |

| It's called El Nino. It's a cyclical phenomenon and the last one occured around 10 years before. |

| Oh my, the (really beautiful) pictures and details above so remind me of my childhood in New England - seems this winter is a real 'back to the future' thing! I'm sending warm thoughts to all the Northerners from this Yankee defector. Stay safe, y'all! |

| It is beautiful, but we don't want any down here in southern Missouri. We had a 6 inch one is all. They have gone mostly south of us. Very strange. I am glad your power outage wasn't too long. We had an 11 day one over our bad ice storm a few years ago. I hope your pantry is full and you don't have to get out. |

| A few more shots from Pittsburgh: Me in front of a huge snow pile about to avalanche on top of me. (Looking so attractive in my winter gear)
Sooo happy I bought this little heater! I've been debating for a long time. Found this out of the box and dusty and a local pet store. Yay! Works perfectly!
Usually this feeder is so high the squirrels have to jump up onto it to steal the food. Look how close the cardinal is. :-/

| Pittsburgh has really had it, haven't they! My friends there have photos of them digging out the back yard up to their shoulders the FIRST time around! My goodness. |

| I must say that's the first time that I've seen birds "walk in" to dine! Crazy winter weather! We're sitting here in North Carolina with snow to the north and there will be snow to the south. If it shifts... Everyone -- stay safe, stay warm. Eat chocolate. Cameron |

| It's really been coming down hard already about two inches of snow and it isn't supposed to stop till morning! HAven't had a snaow like this here since 89' and I'm just loving it! Sooo pretty! Cracks me up cause I'm a northerner and when it snows here you have everyone and their grandmother outside looking at the snow falling (including myself cause I miss it) and you hear the laughter of children playing in the snow. I know everyone else up farther north is sick of it though not to mention the damage it has caused. For us here though it is a treat. I am concerned about my roses because the weight of the snow is bending down the branches because it is such a heavy wet snow. NOt to mention they are not use to snow and are teas, chinas, and noisettes that are more sensitive to cold. Anyone have these in areas where it snows? The thing is mine still had some leaves on them too. ~Meghan |
