Bloomers !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by plantmaven 8b/9a TX (My Page) on Sun, Feb 7, 10 at 11:23
| I found these blooming yesterday.
The bulbs came from a 200 + years old stone house on the Blanco river in Blanco, TX. Pronounced blank-o, which is spanish for the word white.
I planted them in Nov. 07, but this is the first time they have bloomed.

| Lovely Kathy, looks like it is one of the scented ones. I have pretty much given up on Narcissus here because of that nasty little N. fly but used to grow a lot at one time. Annette |

They are scented. but they do not smell like the paperwhites we buy today. Much of this part of TX was settled by Germans and Alsatians, way before TX became a country in about 1836. The first I saw any growing was New Braunfels, TX. They were in cottage style yards of OLD Sunday houses. They are called Sunday houses as they were used when the ranch and farm familes went to town on Saturday to buy their supplies and stayed over to go to church on sunday. I suspect that a lot of these narcissus came from Germany. The house these came from had a room they could barracade to protect themselves from indian raids. Hard to imagine an era like that. |

| Kathy, yours might be one of the oldie tazettas, if I remember correctly paperwhites fall into this narcissus class but not all tazettas are paperwhites. I bet yours has a sweeter scent then the paperwhites of today. A house with a room they could barricade against indian attacks, is it still standing? Now that's a piece of history. I have a little double narcissus found in a vacant lot that has been around for more than 75 years, have no idea which one it is, I do know it's not Rip Van Winkle. Annette |

| Looks great and I can imagine the fragrance they must have. We have similar flowers down here that smell great and defintely different than the way paperwhites smell. |

| They have almost a citrus scent, a bit sweet. The house and all the out buildings are still in use. Diane's son and family lived there for several years while the owner was living in France. The owner is a direct heir of the original owner. Annette, thanks for the correct spelling of barricade, I knew that wasn't right, but was having a senior moment. LOL! |
