Tell me about Heliotrope please

Posted by momof2luv2garden Z8Summerville,SC (My Page) on

I was taking a look at past threads having to do with fragrance and I really found very few who mentioned this plant. I was wanting to get some seed of Heliotrope-White or Fragrant delight as it is listed as being intensely fragrant. Does anyone grow these and can you please tell me what you think of smell and also how it grows for you.

RE: Tell me about Heliotrope please

It is said the mauve or purple Heliotrope smell like cherry pie, I don't know about that but it does have a lovely sweet scent. I've never grown the white varieties but would image they have the same sweet scent, the variety you mention might even be more fragrant than most. Here they are pretty much treated as an annual but a very nice annual. I've also seen them grown as standards, these would need the protection of a greenhouse or sunroom for the winter.

I think they smell like baby powder, others i asked said it smells like sugar cookies! I cant get enough of that plant. I keep in on my porch in pots. I plan on mixing it with white impatients this year. I tried putting it in the sun and it didnt like it. I really think you should have some if you have room! Its a plant i want on my porch every year.

At one time I offered seeds of Fragrant Delight & White Heliotropes, but I've never gotten them to germinate (sterile?), so I removed them from my list. What I DO have seeds for is the tall species (4-5 feet; also known as 'Cherry Pie'), whose flowers bloom in various shades of purple/lavender. The scent varies from plant to plant, also, ranging in that nice baby powder smell as lilyfinch stated to almost sickly sweet (to me, that is~everyone else here liked it). I probably have a few seeds for 'Marine' heliotrope, too. If you're interested in either of those, feel free to email me.

Thanks, I have been painting and haven't had a chance to reply. That's what I do in winter home improvement.lol
jaynine- you know I didn't even realize that those that I saw weren't seeds but plants. I wonder too why that is. I asked Remy who sells seeds cheap online and asked if she would ever get any. She said that she searched but that either the seeds are waaay to expensive or that they can only be grown from cuttings. She said the Marine isn't very fragrant. Do you grow it and if so what do you think of its smell.
Lily and Annette do you know what kinds you have that smell?

The only reason I want it is for smell. Select Seeds had the white but for $5.99 for one plant! Not happening! So I don't know I may try another variety. ~Meghan

I grew 'Marine' in the garden a couple years ago & really liked it, though I can't remember how 'smelly' it was. (I guess not enough to make an impact.) I think you had to get right down to the flower to really smell it, but it WAS fragrant--the same baby powder scent of the white & 'Fragrant Delight'. I personally prefer the white one over all I've seen (and smelled). Sometimes you just have to give in & pay for what you want!

I would say that out of all the fragrant plants I have experienced this is one of the strongest of the pleasant ones. It is the type that wafts on the air. You don't need to stick your nose right in it particularly if you plant large groups of it. I'm very surprised that a thread on fragrant plants didn't mention this much.
