I spent the afternoon on hands and knees.

And it felt great to be in the garden again. I pulled two wheelbarrow loads of weeds from one small part of the perennial bed. I've got a lot more to get before I start planting out in a couple weeks.

More rain on the way this weekend and tonight. The soil is soggy. But the plants are showing progress. Spring is only 42 and a half days away!

First crocus. It opened and closed in less than an hour. The sun wasn't being cooperative.

Golden Jubilee hyssop

Moonbeam coreopsis

Carrie's montauk daisy

Lots of wintersown sprouts in the hoophouse. I have a problem. I've got 125 of these cups and every seed sprouted. It's rudbeckia hirta. I think I may be doing some guerrilla gardening across the street this spring.

Are you playing in the dirt yet?

Oh, look at that! Isn't that exciting!

It's weird. Last year I was much more excited about things coming back. It was my first spring with real perennials in the ground, so every leaf, every bud, every shoot was something to get excited about. This year, with the weather we've been having, it's more like, yeah, and? LOL.

I'm just happy to have spent some time in the garden, not splitting firewood.

Oh, lucky you! Here, it's been raining. all. day. Cold, too. Maybe next week!? I keep hoping, and wishing, and wondering, and thinking, that soon, very soon, I'll be working out there!

Smart of you to plant that crocus. I don't think there's anything blooming here except lots, and lots, and lots of weeds!

I was just going to post the same thing!! Today has been wonderfully sunny, so I decided to go and have a look at everyting. Since I was there I got out the pruners to cut down old stems and foliage (I do cleanup in spring) of the peony, since it has started to poke up early. Then one thing led to another and I ended up getting the entire back garden cleared, lol! Even got my very first garden related blister of the season. ;-)

Lots of other things sprouting up too! Daylilies, Iris, Maltese Cross, Coreopsis, etc. I even see a few red buds on the roses.

I didn't plant that crocus. It was here when I bought the house. The lady that lived here for more than 40 years planted all kinds of bulbs where I built my perennial bed. I'm glad she did. Otherwise, I'd have no blooms, not even Dandelions are up yet.

3 feet of snow still on the ground here yet. Late March is the earliest I can start thinking about doing what you did today! As cold as it has been so far, it might be April this year!

3'? Ugh. I don't think I could handle that. I'm happy with the couple of inches we receive each year. Normally, I can be out in the yard almost all year, except mid February when it's coldest, but this year, January nearly killed me. We almost got down into the single digits several nights. We're not used to that weather here. So even at 45 today, it was nice.

Token, I'm jealous, sure we had a beautiful, sunny day here today; the calm before the storm. We are supposed to get between 12" to 24" of snow starting Friday evening. To add insult to injury, they are already predicting more snow for next Tuesday. I wish I could say I was out there today weeding, but I don't expect to see anything for a few more weeks. Thanks el nino!

I can relate. I am in zone 7B in southern middle Tennessee. Last weekend we had mainly ice covering everything so I was ready to run outside and inspect things after it melted. I was down on my hands and knees trying to spy things out (shoulda pulled some weeds down there) What I found was my first pink lenten rose bloom, winter honeysuckle bloom opening and winter jasmine which had opened then froze to a pale color. I have crocus with buds but no blooms yet. I feel like spring is here when the first daffodil opens (usually late Feb)

Oohh - it's so nice to see signs of spring, even if it isn't here. Token, too many plants, I'm thinking yard sale. Even if you only get $1 each, it is a fund towards your costs. lol.

Here, the only playing in the dirt is winter sowing, and some, OK a lot, of slipping.

Nancy.

Your signs of spring look GREAT! only 41 days now, right? ;^)

RE: I spent the afternoon on hands and knees.

We've had ice, and some water. A lot of water so far this month almost 9" of rain in our area!!! Last week we had waist high water on most of our property. I've planted nothing, and have a lot of reclaiming work to do here. And of course, more "water proofing". I can't wait to get on with it!!!

I was out playing in the dirt today :) Seeing green again in most of my plants and how sweet is that? Some crocus starting to pop up in my whiskey barrels but not in the ground. I have lots to do out there since I was sidelined by meniscus tear surgery in October. Nice having my knee nortmal again. Rain is expected for the next couple of days which means here comes the weeds.

I can tell you are much younger than I. I would have passed out after the first load. But I was able to get out a while today...see my post re: pretty day.
This is the worst winter in 20+ years.

Maybe you can donate some of the plants to an elementary school.

I’m glad some people around here are getting stuff done. Geesh, I’m so tired of this rain and slush! More to come this evening. Our creeks are up and the ground is so soggy. I go outside with my big ol’ boots on and it’s plop plop plop squish squish squish. I’m thinking, is spring ever gonna get here?

RE: I spent the afternoon on hands and knees.

Ahhhhh, seeing all that new growth gets the juices going doesn't it. The sun was out here for a couple of hours today FINALLY!!! So I went out and tidied up one of the borders where a lot of specie crocus are. Tom I've got dandelions, want some? I didn't think so :).

Kathy, sorry you're having such a rotten winter we had a stinker of a winter last year, with temps dropping below 0 F. So far this winter has been exceptionally mild, unfortunately that means lots of slugs and snails to deal with in the coming months.

I hope the weather turns nicer for those of you are suffering from the wet, snow and cold, take heart spring is just around the corner. Look at it this way at least the cold kills off some of those nasty little beasties that attack our gardens.

We've had more snow & cold than usual, but so nice to see signs of spring from those just south of me. I know I'll be seeing it too soon. I just hope I don't lose any bulbs from all the wet weather.
