Sprinkle your seeds as soon as possible and it will work.
I have zinnias come up from previous year's plants all the time. They come up about the same time the iris begin peeping out.

Also, here's a technique I use for all my spring bulbs. I layer multi season bulbs all in one hole and topped them off with daffodils to prevent rabbits or squirrels from eating them. This way, the spot continuesly flowers until they all go dormant. I also sprinkle seeds of any annuals near or on the pile to so once again when the bulbs start yellowing, more flowers are produced.

I tend to plant my bulbs behind low growing shrubs now. Tiny spireas do a wonderful job of leafing out just when I need to hide messy foliage.
