Alyssum does well for us in Texas. I just sowed a bunch of it myself to add to what I put in last fall.

Creeping thyme. It's cheap, easy to find, has color and smell good. Just sprinkle and water.

I suggest using thyme too. In fact there are so many creeping thyme variety that you could combine them. I use mother of thyme, lemon thyme and yet another form of thyme. They are fragrant to walk on and bloom at dfferent stages.

Elfin thyme is my favorite - creates a tight nice green carpet. Very low maintenance.

As others have mentioned thyme, I want to add my opinion--thyme suppresses weeds better than any other ground cover that I've used, so go for it!
