Cottage Gardens

where to step

Hi,

Naive question here, but I am trying to put together a perennial border, basically cottage style. I've got it drilled into my head that I should never step on the garden soil, and I'm wondering how people commonly deal with weeding and such in a border wider than they can reach. Stepping stones? Build mini-paths throughout? Just step on it when needed? Many thanks. Photos appreciated if you have a useful solution.
