How cool is that!!! I have a lot of alder saplings...I think they came in the mulch I put in! Wish an arbutus sapling would come along!

We have a Kousa and it finally bloomed this year because it is tall enough to be out of reach of deer mouths. That said, it can't reach full potential in my garden so I'm giving it to my son this fall when it can be safely transplanted.

I am pretty sure that it isn't a dogwood. Look at photos of ash leaves. If you take a more close-up photo, I'll look more carefully, but those look like compound leaves (several leaflets on one leaf stem.) Like most dogwood, ash have leaves that are opposite from each other, and the ash leaflets are similar in shape to dogwood leaves. If it is an ash, you might want to re-evaluate its placement since ashes get much larger than dogwoods.

Not a dogwood, it's hard to tell what it is from the picture. It is vaguely reminiscent of tree of heaven but the leaves are far too wide.

Doesn't look like Dogwood to me either, and my first thought was Ash.

You can tell if it's a dogwood when you take one of the leaves and pull(not tear) it apart slowly. While doing that, there will be some silky string coming out from both pieces. That's something I learned from a tv show.
