My Make-shift rRse Arch and the Roses

As a dear friend reminded me recently, I often have to take the ugly stuff laying around me and make it look better - pretty. I don't have the money for pretty, fancy arches, so this piece of wire bent over the two obelisk towers will have to do. I need to wire the ends down on each end for stability.
When the two roses grow up into it and over it, not much will show anyhow.

Necessity is the mother of invention, and with little or no budget for the garden, I need to be inventive.

Rosa, Centenaire de Lourdes is a Floribunda. She grows to 4-5 ft and has medium pink and light pink blended blooms. She is very disease resistant. Great in zones 6-9. May do alright in colder zones with good winter protection. She naturally grows with her blooms drooping downward like this. I think it is a beautiful rose. Some people don't like roses that grow like this, but I love them. She is a very blousy and feminine rose. Even though the blooms are huge and the bloom stems are tiny, it is a very sturdy rose and will hold all her heavy-headed blooms and never collapse under the weight. She has very shiny leaves. She has a super sweet and delicious fragrance. Just a dreamy rose. I want to grow more of this rose.

I pulled the weeds and tucked her into the obelisk to get her growing where I want her to grow. She is only 2-1/2 ft tall, but makes full-sized large blooms. This is her second spring in my garden.

This is Rosa, Gartendirektor Otto Linne - her second spring too. She is just beginning to bloom. She is a Shrub rose 6-12 ft. Make room for her to grow! She has few thorns. Tiny blooms grow in clusters of cascading bouquets. Pick one and you have a bouquet. Perfect for Tussy Mussys and bridal bouquets. She has a mild, but lovely old-rose fragrance (in my garden). Her leaves stay a light Spring green (or yellow green), which sets off her dark pink flowers. Good for zones 5-9.

I bought both of these and some of my others from Countryside gardens. (See link below) I highly recommend their roses. They originally were in Louisiana, but moved to Mississippi. Then they got almost completely wiped out in the Katrina Hurricane. It was a horrific loss. However, customers pitched in, sending them roses and cuttings and they bounced back. Very nice country people.

It'll do the job! Good idea.

Just this morning I was brainstorming on ways to help a cup and saucer vine grow on up and along the porch railing. I've got it figured out - going to buy several pieces of the small inexpensive wooden picket fence border and tack them up. Then I'll take it down after the vine dies.

Annie, like you said, once the roses grow up,no one will even know.By the way, beautiful roses.

I took some of those vinyl coated shelves and with the lip on them was able to re-purpose them and hang them off the block wall that separates mine and my neighbors yard on one side, and on the other side i have a white steel fence and hung some on there as well. This enable me to hang things from them. These are in my backyard.

I recycle and reuse lots of things. Here are a couple pictures of the closet shelves,re-used.

hardenbergia

Don't know what these cage type things were for as the openings are too big for birds, but my friend was going to throw them away and i told them i'd give them a good home.I have 2 of them.

petunias

Got this off someones trash on trash day.

Garden god

another look at the shelf.

Epis

another old rack, need to repaint them.

amaryllis

OOPS,kinda got carried away with the pictures.

I have no problem with you posting pictures on here. What in the world is that beautiful purple vine in your first photo? That is spectacular!

BTW, Schoolhouse and I would wrestle you for that Roman bust. He looks like Zeus. I have Dionysus. Schoolhouse has things Greco-Roman in her fabulous sunken garden and elsewhere. Dumpster diving is great. I love good junk! Just thought I would warn you about that bust of Zeus. (wink)

Annie, what a clever thing to do! And you're right, once they start growing you won't even see the arch part.

I've never grown roses. Down here you have to spray unless you grow the antiques. Are yours antiques? I was tempted to try one on my arbor and was planning on ordering a Pinkie from Countryside, but last year planted clematis instead. How heavy do climbing roses get?

Annie, that's a Hardenbergia,i've had it for many years, bought it on the clearance table at home depot, and gave it some tlc and look what i got.We have cut it all the way back several times over the years, but it always comes back strong.Up close the flowers look like little mini orchids, real pretty purple and inside a lime/chartruse green. It starts blooming here in Dec and continues thru february.

As for zeus,i'll keep a good eye on him!!! LOL I also love garden junk!1

Fantastic pictures! I think you did a good job with the arch.

Annie, did you get the possible tornadic storms a bit ago? We had to go to the cellar, and afterwards some wind broke part of my large Coreopsis. :( Hopefully you didn't get any and your trellis didn't fall down.
A lot of heavy rain here.

I love to see pictures, and I love to see what others are so inventive to use and put to great beauty.

Annie ~ You are so right about necessity being the mother of invention. Your roses are lovely and they will fill in and cover the fencing in time.

We make do with things we have around here too. We also are curbside shoppers, have been for our whole 40 years together. Too late to stop now.

Enjoy all that beauty that surrounds you. Your gardens and all that you do with them inspire me.

Annie- Great arch! I love Otto...I ordered one that should be here next month from Rogue Valley Roses. I don't know if he'll get that big in my space, but he's own root and in a protected area, so he should be okay :)

Great story about Countryside Roses. It's great how everyone helped them out after the hurricane. Sometimes people can be so nice!

Great creativity! Your roses are charming - and the blooms nodding down will be even lovelier when they are above you!
