Help with Celosia

Oakley

My town's tiny garden center had the most pathetic Celosia's but with perfect plumes. I don't know why I bought some but I did.

The Celosia's are each on one 8" stalk with a healthy plume. No shoots coming up from the root ball for it to branch out. There are little shoots on the stalk though.

I read the first plume should be snipped. I'm fine with that, but is the plant already doomed because it wasn't pruned when it was a seedling?

Would it be okay to plant the root ball a bit deeper to keep the thing from blowing over? lol.
