Does it have to be evergreen, if not how about a Ninebark (Physocarpus) I have 'Diablo' this one will get to a good height and spread. It also looks a picture when flowering. There are other varieties like 'Coppertina' and 'Dart's Gold' but not sure if they get as tall as 'Diablo', check them out.

I feel bad for you. I'm in the same boat -- having to cut down a beautiful, but diseased old native dogwood.

You'll be able to fill up that whole in no time and get your privacy back. And in the end, you'll probably enjoy having more colorful interest there.

Ninebark is nice, as Annette suggested. I have a Darts Gold that does seem to stay smaller than the Diablo (about 5' for me so far) but it blends nicely with other shrubs.

If it's full sun, it's probaby too hot for rhodies. I have a black beauty sambucus that is really nice and can be easily pruned if it gets too big. Another one I like is my Golden Spirit cotinus which has shot up to 6' in two years and spread nicely.

You have so many choices for a nice sunny spot. How dry is your soil there?

You have my sympathies. Like eightzoner says, something like this can be a good thing; but it's oh so hard to be positive this soon. Good luck.

I know, I know, I was heartbroken when we had to cut down our 40 year old Cedar Elm that we had planted as a baby, but it was causing problems, big branches breaking off in wind storms causing roof problems on my shed (had to replace the roof). I would suggest letting it be for a little while, see what pops up, then deciding what you want to plant. I was happily surpised at what happened with more light!
