Tropical Spa or Humble Little Washing Off Place?

| Some of you have alluded to your outdoor showers or 'cowboy hottubs' -- can we see?
At season's end last year, I bought an outdoor shower fixture.
Not having 'sunk a plan' it is still in the box. Sure would come in handy about now.
Please show us your outdoor bathing arrangements and tropical baths.
Thanks,

| I have a plan, but haven't planted mine yet. I backed off of shrubs when I dug a hole and realized the sewer lines are under the area. I decided to put a clumping bamboo in in a pot instead. We've bought the pot and soil already, but then the 100+ degree weather came and we haven't done the transplant (the bamboo has been in the ground out front for a year). I intend to divide my cannas and colocasia when they are big enough to be divided. And, divide some more of my ginger. I think bulb plants will be okay in the ground around the sewer lines. As you can tell, I want to use what I have instead of buying more plants. I want a tropical feel and will wait until my plants can be divided. So...all we have is the outdoor shower, mulched ground around it and stained stepping stones from our deck steps over to it. Ours came from RH when it was on deep discount at the end of summer sale. Teak floor slats/boards and post. Nice nickel rain shower head and controls. I don't have a photo since I've not planted it up yet. We are using it almost daily. My DH absolutely loves it after a run or mowing the meadow. He showers off and jumps in the pool! |

I eased into this idea with DH. Turns out, they had an outdoor shower with a 'beach cabana' type wood slat surround when he was an adolescent, right out back here! I'm planning plantings and deciding whether to have a door or a curtain; he's planning how to pipe hot water, LOL. I borrowed photos off the net for three years, looking for the ideal. |

| We have been thinking of adding an outdoor shower once we get the side yard enclosed with the new fence and plantings. We don't get all that warm here until late July and August and even then it cools off in the evenings to the point of having to wear a light sweater or windbreaker quite often. Still, it would be nice to shower off on those hot days and recycle the water to the gardens. Our interest in this project was heightened last Sept. when we rented a cottage on Anini Beach, Kaua'i. It had an outdoor shower with an incredible view. Saying it was tropical is an understatement. : ) At first I was a bit apprehensive with showering outdoors because while it was private it was still wide open in one direction. I ended up putting the lightweight fleece blanket that I always carry on planes over the clothes line that was there for towels and bathing suits to dry. It worked great and I could still see over it to the magnificent views. DH usually showered without the blanket in place - he couldn't have cared less who saw him, he just loved the freedom of it all. Typical guy, eh? ; ) Here are some pics. There was a Bosch tankless water heater on the other side of the bamboo fence. It seemed to work great and the owner of the property said she hadn't had any problems with it.
This was the view to the right - Kalihiwai Bay. Pierce Brosnan lives in one of the gigantic homes here. The locals say he and his family are some of the nicest people you will ever meet.
This was the view looking out from the cottage and the shower, all private property so no one could see us.
We did have a few "onlookers" : ) The chickens were all freed during hurricane Iniki. They are EVERYWHERE. lol!
Now how's that for tropical! : ) Diana |

Lots to do before it will be in use. I think a little cabana where it stands in the first pic would be the sensible thing. |

| Ooohhh yeah, I like the idea of a cabana! Maybe something with a colorful stripe. Or a beachy theme? Or maybe something in a soothing color to go along with the calming sensation of the shower water? Oh the possibilities are endless. : ) Diana |
