Will the rain ever stop?

| What a rainy June we've had in New England. The gardens are growing very lush. Hopefully July will bring a little bit more sun. Here are a couple of rainy photos of my cottage area:
Poor Peonies! I was so glad to see everyone posting their beautiful peony photos on other links!

Oh, how lovely! That is a perfect garden. And I don't live that far away in northern Mass. It will not stop pouring. So, so depressing. Everything is flattened. I started a thread on the New England forum--Suppose they gave a year without a June?--and that about covers it. But your garden is so beautiful, even in the endless rain.

Your garden is soooo beautiful! We have had tons of rain here in CT too. In spite of it my gardens are blooming and everything is BIG! That includes my weeds.

We've had lots of rain here, too - I have been trying to make progress digging a new flower bed, but it's been too wet. It hasn't rained now for about 3 days and it's finally dry enough to dig. Your poor peonies do look sad, but the garden is really lovely - the urn in the center bed is really elegant! Here's wishing you a little sun to bring on the blooms!

Rub it in. 2 weeks now with no rain and temps in the upper 90s most days. No rain at all in the forecast for the next week. Lovely gardens. I remember when we were having that kind of rain and I was wishing for some sun...careful what you wish for. :(

Thyme2dig, your gardens are truly gorgeous! But I so well understand your frustration (I'm a New England transplant). I recall the summer of '67 when there were but two sunny Saturdays all summer long (my wedding day in late June and my cousin's in mid August). I wasn't gardening then, but do remember that my shoes literally molded in the closets! Besides that, it was the dreariest of years! Hope y'all pull out soon! And Token's right - I'm in the dry, 90's neighborhood too and had to haul hose and water last night ..... grrrrrr! If only we could strike a deal w/Mother Nature for moderation in each direction!

Perfect garden indeed. Looking at those photos, I have to say you are not allowed to complain about the rain! Well, maybe just a small whine about the peonies.....

Alisande, LOL! No real complaints here. Just wondering if this rain will ever give us a little break. I have been extremely fortunate that even with all this rain I don't seem to have an abundance of slugs and nothing is rotting. (I can also nap on weekends and not feel guilty!) There's always next year for the peonies. I wonder how many times in a gardening year that gardeners say "oh well, NEXT year they will be spectacular" over something that didn't go "quite right" with certain plants. Token and Zigzag, my folks are in NC and I know what they go through with drought. They are constantly watering. It is definitely a much tougher battle to deal with drought than constant rain. Let's hope the jetstream changes soon and we can all get some relief!

It seems every week I make that comment, oh yeah, next year will be better. But next year, I'll have an irrigation system in my beds. I'll turn a valve and the whole yard will get a nice, slow soaking overnight.

Here is Central Alabama the drought is back too. Had so much rain in Ap and May now nothing and the high dry temps are baking everything. A hose only does so much you have to have rain...sigh...your garden is truly beautiful.c

What a lovely cottage garden, rain or shine! The stone is really pretty. Did you lay it yourselves? We're doing something similar in our back garden area. Also, what type stone is it? We're having a few thunderheads but no rain to speak of. But everything is on automatic watering/timers. That's the only way to go out here in the dry west. I do some hand watering for new plantings to get them established and some pots. Diana

Your poor peonies. I really like the stone path. Beautiful garden!...even if you are getting all my rain. Yesterday's high temp was 104. If I have to get out I try to do it before it reaches 90. We can use the sprinkler system 1 out of 14 days. But we can use a hand held hose any time. Kathy in hot hot Texas |

I'm going to ask about your hardscaping/stone work too ..... I have many flagstone paths thru my gardens, but have a heck of a time keeping them so neat! What is your base (wet, black in the pics between the flagstones) substance? I've got crushed rock, bordered by rotted leaf mulch and over the years the mulch has traveled into the rock parts and sometimes it looks downright messy! I have lifted and re-set runs of flagstones to some degree of success, but am always interested in different applications. I'll appreciate any pointers you have to offer ... and again, thank you for posting such pretty pics! And I do hope you're getting some sunshine these days!

What a gorgeous garden!! Our issue is the opposite around here: Will the rain ever return? My garden went from fabulous to pitiful and thirsty. Enjoy the heavenly water - your plants seem to love it - I can see them dancing in a rain! |

Kathy, 104 degrees? Oh, I feel terrible for you. You really can't do anything in that kind of heat and the plants must really suffer for it. At least I can still work in 65 degree rainy weather. Hang in there and hopefully you'll get some relief soon. In reference to the questions on the pavers they are a thick blue slate from either western VT or eastern NY. We saw 2 pallets of them and bought them immediately. I've never seen them anywhere around here again (we bought them about 7 years ago). The slates are laid right on top of the virgin soil (which had been severely compacted by a bulldozer during building). The paths probably look pretty neat because my DH just finished the project (yes, after 7 years!) this spring. We started years ago and got halfway done and I just didn't like it. I think it was because we had used a whitish stonedust. We just stopped the project and thought about it...ummmm.....for 6 years! LOL! We were just about to rip it all out this spring and put in a more formal pathway when my DH found a bagged product called leveling sand. We bought it at our local Ace Hardware. It was a blue-grey color and that really worked for me. I think it looks much better because there is not as much contrast with the stones. Heavy rains do kick the sand up onto the pavers, but it can be swept off if necessary. The texture is a lot like stonedust as opposed to something like play sand. I think the only way to have a truly neat and tidy pathway is either brick or formed pavers fitted together. However, I do like the seedlings that come up in the path, and I think in a cottage-style area you can get away with being a little less tidy. We did look into a product called Gator Dust which is basically a stone dust that actually hardens in the cracks. I've attached a link in case anyone is interested. It did sound like a great product for certain projects. With the frost heaving we get up here I didn't want a cement-like product in the cracks.
Here is a link that might be useful: Stone dust

I'm guessing no. Sigh. ~Drowning in a town near you, mmq
RE: Will the rain ever stop?

Hard to imagine "frost heaving". Here the soil shrinks as it dries out, so there have been a lot of broken water lines around town. Sure wish one would break in front of my house.

Thanks for the info on the pavers and leveling sand. I thought they looked like bluestone. Lucky you! It's pretty pricey out here since we don't "grow" the stuff. ; ) I think we all have some of those UFO (unfinished objects). lol! Diana
