any insight as to why the buds on my hollyhocks are drying up and falling off this year????

Could be those small gray sucking insects, look for them on the buds and along the stems.

I just saw this post. Mine have done exactly the same thing this summer. All the ones by the house are stricken, but I have a few out by the barn and those are just fine. I was mystified. Weevils, huh? I'll have to check those buggers out.
